Method and system for emission control of a compression ignition locomotive engine. The method includes measuring an actual power level of the engine, comparing a desired power level with the actual power level of the engine; implementing a combustion strategy based on the comparing of the desired and the actual power levels; and implementing an emission strategy based on the combustion strategy. The emission strategy is intended to attain a predetermined emission level in the exhaust from the engine.

Method and system for emission control of a compression ignition locomotive engine

A method and apparatus of operating a turbo-charged diesel locomotive engine to facilitate controlling pressure in an engine cylinder is provided. The method includes determining an allowable peak firing pressure for the turbo-charged diesel engine, determining an actual peak firing pressure, and comparing the allowable peak firing pressure to actual peak firing pressure to control the operation of the turbocharger for controlling peak firing pressure. The apparatus includes a diesel engine including an intake manifold, an exhaust manifold, an electronic fuel controller, a turbo-charger, and a motor-generator coupled to the turbocharger and operable to at least one of increase turbocharger rotational speed, decrease turbocharger rotational speed, and maintain turbocharger rotational speed, and a controller including a first input corresponding intake manifold air pressure and a second input corresponding to fuel injection timing for the engine and including as an output a motor-generator configuration signal.

Methods and apparatus for controlling peak firing pressure for turbo-charged diesel engines

An apparatus (,) for controlling the peak pressure in the combustion chamber (,) of a turbo-charged diesel locomotive engine (,). A pressure relief valve (,) is disposed in the compressor discharge downstream of the turbo-charger (,). The relief valve (,) is operable to release a selected amount (,) of the compressed air (,) produced by the compressor section (,) of turbo-charger (,). The actuation of valve (,) may be a function of the pressure of the compressed air (,), and/or a manifold air temperature signal (,) and a fuel injection timing signal (,). An actuator (,) attached to valve (,) is responsive to a valve position signal (,) generated by a controller (,) having the appropriate inputs and programmed logic capability.
