A buffered negative electrode-electrolyte assembly includes: a porous negative electrode comprising a metal, a transition metal nitride, or a combination thereof; a solid-state electrolyte; and a buffer layer between the porous negative electrode and the solid-state electrolyte. The buffer layer comprising a buffer composition according to Formula (1) MNZHX. The buffer composition has an electronic conductivity that is less than or equal to 1×10times an electronic conductivity of the solid-state electrolyte, and the buffer composition has an ionic conductivity less than or equal to 1×10times an ionic conductivity of the solid-state electrolyte.

Elastic strain engineering of materials

A mixed ionic-electronic conductor (MIEC) in contact with a solid electrolyte includes a material having a bandgap less than 3 eV. The material includes an end-member phase directly connected to an alkali metal by a tie-line in an equilibrium phase diagram. The material is thermodynamically stable with a solid electrolyte. The MIEC includes plurality of open pores, formed within the MIEC, to facilitate motion of the alkali metal to at least one of store the alkali metal in the plurality of open pores or release the alkali metal from the plurality of open pores. The solid electrolyte has an ionic conductivity to ions of the alkali metal greater than 1 mS cm, a thickness less than 100 μm, and comprises at least one of a ceramic or a polymer.

Compositions and processes for forming barrier coatings to prevent hydrogen embrittlement of an underlying material are disclosed. The coating can be made up of composite structures of metal and oxide that are alternately deposited onto a substrate for creating a multilayer coated substrate. Such multilayer coating can be incorporated into many contexts in which hydrogen permeation prevention is desired, such as pipelines and manufacture of advanced automotive steels. The process involves depositing a metal layer onto the substrate followed by a metal oxide layer thereon. The interface of the metal layer and the oxide layer can form space-charge zones that decrease hydrogen permeability therethrough.

Elastic strain engineering of defect doped materials

A hybrid cathode for a Li—S battery may include an intercalation-type material and a conversion-type material. The conversion-type material, such as sulfur, may increase the gravimetric energy density, E, of the battery. The intercalation-type material may increase the electrical and ionic conductivity of the cathode and contribute to the capacity of the battery, enabling replacement of partial high-surface-area conductive carbon and increasing the volumetric energy density, E. In combination, the conversion-type material and the intercalation-type material may be used to increase Eand Esimultaneously while providing sufficient rate capability. In one example, a hybrid cathode includes an electrode and a cathode material. The cathode material includes a first concentration of an intercalation compound, a second concentration of sulfur, and a third concentration of carbon. Furthermore, the intercalation compound and sulfur contribute to the capacity of the Li—S battery within a voltage window of 1.7 V to 2.8 V.

Intercalation-conversion hybrid cathode for a Li—S battery

The buffer layer comprising a buffer composition according to Formula (1) MNZHX. The buffer composition has an electronic conductivity that is less than or equal to 1&#xd7;10times an electronic conductivity of the solid-state electrolyte, and the buffer composition has an ionic conductivity less than or equal to 1&#xd7;10times an ionic conductivity of the solid-state electrolyte.

An anode includes a mixed ionic-electronic conductor (MIEC) with an open pore structure. The open pore structure includes open pores to facilitate motion of an alkali metal into and/or out of the MIEC. The open pore structure thus provides open space to relieve the stresses generated by the alkali metal when charging/discharging a battery. The MIEC is formed from a material that is thermodynamically and electrochemically stable against the alkali metal to prevent the formation of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) debris and the formation of dead alkali metal. The MIEC may also be passive (the MIEC does not store or release alkali metal). In one example, the open pore structure may be an array of substantially aligned tubules with a width less than about 300 nm, a wall thickness between about 1 nm to about 30 nm, and a height of at least 10 um arranged as a honeycomb.

Methods and apparatus to facilitate alkali metal transport during battery cycling, and batteries incorporating same

Described are CMOS-compatible protonic resistive devices (e.g., processing elements and/or memory elements). In embodiments, a protonic resistive memory can be formed from a proton-sensitive metal oxide channel where the concentration of protons intercalated inside the layer is controlled to modulate its conductivity. The protons can initially be supplied to the material stack by an implantation method. Irradiation techniques can be implemented to increase the concentration and conductivity of protons inside the materials. Some designs can put the active layer and reservoir in direct contact, creating an electrolyte-free device. Designs provide scalable solutions for full-scale Si-integration.

CMOS-compatible protonic resistive devices

Previous hybrid-anion and cation-redox (HACR) cathodes were limited in cycling performance by irreversible anionic redox reactions caused by the loss of anions. To overcome this limitation, a lithium (Li) transition metal (M) oxide particle is described having a Li concentration gradient. In one example, the particle includes a Li-rich core region that provides capacity and energy density due anionic and cationic contributions and a Li-poor surface region surrounding the core region to inhibit anionic activity and thus substantially reduce the loss of anions. A gradient region disposed between the core and surface regions has a Li concentration profile that varies from a first Li concentration in the core region to a second Li concentration in the surface region. A high-temperature leaching method may be used to leach LiO from a Li-rich LiMOparticle, thus forming a coherent Li gradient with a stabilized layered structure.

An interlayer for a lithium-sulfur (Li&#x2014;S) battery may include a separator coated with an intercalation compound. The intercalation compound may intrinsically exhibit and/or be modified to have a higher affinity for lithium polysulfides (LiPS), thus reducing the global sulfur mobility and the shuttling effect. Additionally, the intercalation compound may also reduce the formation of a LiS clogging layer, which thus increases the battery lifetime by reducing active material loss and maintaining the rate performance of the Li&#x2014;S battery. Unlike conventional inactive interlayer materials, the intercalation compound may also contribute to the capacity of the battery, thereby increasing the volumetric and gravimetric energy densities. In one example, an interlayer for the Li&#x2014;S battery may be disposed between a cathode and an anode and may include a separator and a coating disposed on the separator. The coating may include an intercalation compound, such as Chevrel-phase MoS, to reduce the global sulfur mobility.
