A method and system for performing chaincast communication to multiple communication systems within a system of coupled electronic devices. In one implementation the electronic devices can be computer systems and the system of coupled electronic devices includes the Internet. The present invention provides a system wherein a broadcast source communicates broadcast information (e.g., encoded audio radio content, encoded audio/video television content, program instructions, etc.) to a first group of electronic devices. The first group of electronic devices can be instructed by a transmission scheduler to then communicate (e.g., forward) the broadcast information to other electronic devices which devices can also be instructed to communicate to more devices, etc., thereby reducing the bandwidth requirements of the communication channel between the broadcast source and the first group of electronic devices.

Chaincast method and system for broadcasting information to multiple systems within the internet

A method and system for performing chaincast communication to multiple communication systems (e.g., computer systems) within a system of coupled electronic devices (e.g., the Internet). The present invention provides a system wherein a broadcast source communicates primary broadcast information (e.g., encoded audio radio content, encoded audio/video television content, etc.) to a first group of electronic devices. The first group of electronic devices can be instructed by a chaincast manager to then communicate (e.g., forward or re-transmit) the broadcast information to other electronic devices which devices can also be instructed to communicate to more devices, etc., thereby reducing the bandwidth requirements of the communication channel between the broadcast source and the first group of electronic devices. The chaincast manager, coupled to the Internet, is used to track and manage which devices are forwarding broadcast information to which other devices. The chaincast manager is also used to monitor the packet rates between the electronic devices. In response to the packet rates falling below a pre-determined threshold value, the transmission re-routes communications to provide better communication load sharing across the system. The chaincast communication system may also include a number of secondary broadcast servers for broadcasting secondary information content (e.g., advertisement, emergency information, community information, etc.) to be rendered independently of the primary broadcast information content.

Method and system for ensuring continuous data flow between re-transmitters within a chaincast communication system

A method and system for performing chaincast communication to multiple communication systems within a system of coupled electronic devices. The present invention provides a system wherein a broadcast source communicates broadcast information (e.g., encoded audio radio content, encoded audio/video television content, program instructions, etc.) to a first group of electronic devices. The first group of electronic devices can be instructed by a transmission scheduler to then communicate (e.g., forward) the broadcast information to other electronic devices which devices can also be instructed to communicate to more devices, etc., thereby reducing the bandwidth requirements of the communication channel between the broadcast source and the first group of electronic devices. Slight communication delays may be encountered by the transmission forwarding, but these delays can typically be tolerated in broadcast transmissions (e.g., radio content, television content, seminars, etc.). The transmission scheduler, coupled to the Internet, is used to track and manage which devices are forwarding broadcast information to which other devices. The transmission scheduler is able to re-route communications when one or more devices terminates or to provide better communication load sharing across the system. The communication is 'chaircast' because the forwarding from one device to another, to another, etc., creates a logical communication 'chain' from the broadcast server to the receiving devices.

The present invention is an intelligent assistant for use with a local computer and with the Internet. The invention's intelligent assistant process includes various menus and training options for training the intelligent assistant to respond to various text, voice, and mouse gesture commands. In its preferred embodiment, the invention's intelligent assistant is represented by an animated character. The character can communicate back to the user through text, voice, and its own animated gestures. The invention's intelligent assistant automatically and constantly communicates with Internet sites of interest to a user and collects information of interest from those Internet sites. The collected information and updates to the collected information, including information that may not be displayed by a browser, are then communicated to the user in a variety of ways, including changing the behavior and the knowledge base of the intelligent assistant. For example, the invention may communicate the collected information of interest or updates to such information by text, voice, or by simply changing the shape of the animated character. The variety of different ways of communicating the information and updates to the information of interest keeps the user alert and interested in the information. In one embodiment of the invention, only those Internet sites that are authorized can be accessed by the intelligent assistant to gather information or updated information of interest to the user.

Intelligent assistant for use with a local computer and with the internet

A method of providing language assistance to a computer user with dyslexia, reading disabilities or visual impairment by presenting text-based information via multiple channels is provided. This technique effectively provides multiple channels of information to a user. Moreover, this method is useful for displaying text-based information to users having disabilities such as dyslexia, or for increasing the entertainment value of viewing a text document. This technique may be used for assisting users in editing documents and in retrieving information from the World Wide Web.

Method of displaying information to a user in multiple windows

A method of providing language assistance to a computer user with dyslexia, reading disabilities or visual impairment by presenting text-based information via multiple media channels. The method of the present invention includes the steps of: accessing a source of text-based data that can originate from a computer text document, displaying text-based data in a text window with a standard font size, displaying the text-based data in another text window with a magnified font size, sequentially highlighting the text-based data in the magnified text window one word at a time; generating synthesized speech signals representative of the highlighted text; rendering the synthesized speech signals audible synchronously with the displaying of the highlighted text; displaying images that correspond to the context of the highlighted text; and generating sound effects that are pertinent to the context of the highlighted text such that text-based information and corresponding graphical and audible information can be perceived simultaneously by the user. This technique effectively provides multiple channels of information to a user. The present invention is particularly useful for displaying text-based information to users having reading disabilities such as dyslexia, or for increasing the entertainment value of viewing a text document. The present invention may be used for assisting users in editing documents and in retrieving information from the World Wide Web.

Method of and apparatus for multi-modal information presentation to computer users with dyslexia, reading disabilities or visual impairment

A computer implemented method and system for gesture category recognition and training. Generally, a gesture is a hand or body initiated movement of a cursor directing device to outline a particular pattern in particular directions done in particular periods of time. The present invention allows a computer system to accept input data, originating from a user, in the form gesture data that are made using the cursor directing device. In one embodiment, a mouse device is used, but the present invention is equally well suited for use with other cursor directing devices (e.g., a track ball, a finger pad, an electronic stylus, etc.). In one embodiment, gesture data is accepted by pressing a key on the keyboard and then moving the mouse (with mouse button pressed) to trace out the gesture. Mouse position information and time stamps are recorded. The present invention then determines a multi-dimensional feature vector based on the gesture data. The feature vector is then passed through a gesture category recognition engine that, in one implementation, uses a radial basis function neural network to associate the feature vector to a pre-existing gesture category. Once identified, a set of user commands that are associated with the gesture category are applied to the computer system. The user commands can originate from an automatic process that extracts commands that are associated with the menu items of a particular application program. The present invention also allows user training so that user-defined gestures, and the computer commands associated therewith, can be programmed into the computer system.

Method and system for gesture category recognition and training using a feature vector

A method and system for implementing an Internet radio device for receiving and/or transmitting audio information over the Internet. The Internet radio device can be implemented as a stand alone electronic radio device which is coupled to the Internet or the Internet radio device can be implemented as a software package operable on a host computer system. The Internet radio device does not require a browser for interfacing with other Internet transmitters (&ldquo;Internet radio station transmitters&rdquo;). The Internet radio includes a graphical user interface (GUI) with which a user can interface in order to receive audio radio programming from an Internet radio station transmitter. The radio device receives a list of Internet radio station transmitters that are registered with a chaincast manager (CCM), also coupled to the Internet. The GUI renders this list to the user. The user can sort or select from this list based on desired language, country, or station names. To hear a radio program, a user can select a station from this list. Data received by a radio device can be retransmitted in chaincast mode from the radio device to other radio devices that want to listen to the same radio program.
