A cassette for light-tightly holding and dispensing a roll of web material, e.g. photographic film, which has a peripheral dispensing slot in its shell for passage of the web therefrom, which slot is formed by generally radially directed re-entrant lips lined with light-sealing strips to seal the slot against penetration by light, the sealing strips being adhered to the mutually facing surfaces of the lips by layers of adhesive on their backsides, preferably a pressure-sensitive adhesive, wherein the innermost edge of each of the adhesive layers is in a radially outwardly retracted position relative to the innermost edge of the associated sealing strip, leaving a short inner marginal portion of the sealing strip free of adhesive and overlying the inner edge of the adhesive layer to conceal and shelter the adhesive edge against possible contact with the exiting web. The non-adhered inner margin, and preferably a short outermost portion of each sealing strip as well, is reinforced to increase its stiffness, as by means of a coating of a polymer.

Light-tight cassette

A daylight loading film sheet package has a stack of film sheets enclosed within a wrapper having front and rear panels covering the front and rear faces of the film stack and projecting side extensions on at least three sides of the panels which are folded into contacting relation and adhered together in close proximity to the corresponding sides of the stack to cover such stack sides. One of the wrapper panels has a sheet-dispensing opening therein with one edge adjacent one stack side which is generally coextensive in length with that stack side, such opening extending from the edge into the panel to permit an outermost film sheet to be accessed and withdrawn from the stack therethrough. The dispensing opening is light-tightly covered by a flexible sheet closure attached at one end to the other wrapper panel adjacent the one stack side and overlying the opening with its side margins adhered to the folded side extensions of the panel containing the opening, the sheet closure being adhered to the panel beyond the opening and terminating in a free end to facilitate its stripping removal from the opening.

Daylight-loading film sheet package

A liquid toner composition comprising carrier liquid and toner particles for the development of electrostatic charge patterns is described wherein the said liquid comprises (1) a bivalent or trivalent metal salt of an oxyacid derived from phosphorus containing at least one organic residue and (2) one or more members selected from the group consisting of amines, polyurethans and alkylated polymers of a heterocyclic N-vinyl monomer. By means of the materials (1) and (2) the polarity of the toner particles can be controlled to obtain optimum image density and contrast. When carbon blacks are used as toner material it is possible to control the polarity to obtain either positive-working or negative-working toner compositions.

Liquid electrophotographic developers

A toner material for use in the development of electrostatic charge patterns is described which comprises carbon black as coloring material, polystyrene as thermoplastic resin binder and at least one diester of orthophthalic or metaphthalic acid that is solid at room temperature as plasticizer, wherein the polystyrene binder has a molecular weight comprised between about 30,000 and about 70,000, the proportion by weight of the carbon black to the binder is comprised between about 5:100 and about 20:100, and the proportion by weight of the said plasticizer(s) to the binder is comprised between about 2:100 and about 15:100. The toner material is of a very simple and inexpensive composition and nevertheless has optimum photographic and physical properties.

A developing material for use in the development of electrostatic images comprising toner particles and carrier particles is described wherein the developing material incorporates at least one solid hydrophobic bivalent or trivalent metal salt of a half-ester of a branched-chain or straight-chain aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and/or at least one bivalent or trivalent metal salt of a monoester or diester of a phosphorus oxyacid. The images obtained by means of this developing material have an improved image contrast, solid area coverage and surface smoothness. The toner particles show less tendency to cake and agglomerate and have improved mechanical strength. Cleaning of the imaging surface between use and re-use is also facilitated.
