A wear-resistant annular seal assembly has a plurality of interlocking one-piece seal segments interleaved with a plurality of two-piece seal segments. The seal segments are made using wear-resistant rigid material such as steel, stainless steel or a composite material. In one embodiment the seal segments are coated with a fluoropolymer. A straddle packer includes a first and second spaced apart ones of the wear-resistant seal assemblies and a linear force generator for urging the first and second seal assemblies to a seal-set condition.

A straddle packer for proppant-laden fracturing fluids has a slotted frac sub with a proppant filtration plug body that excludes proppant in the fracturing fluid from a central passage of the straddle packer downhole from the slotted frac hub. Pressure equalization sleeve filters exclude an entry of debris in a well bore through pressure equalization ports of the straddle packer.

A modular pressure cylinder for a downhole tool has an active mandrel tube that supports a modular pressure cylinder. Pistons of the modular pressure cylinder are respectively interconnected and cylinder walls of modular pressure cylinder are respectively interconnected. When fluid is pumped through a tubing string into the downhole tool, the pistons are urged in one direction while the cylinder walls are urged in an opposite direction along an axis of the active mandrel tube.

An uphole end for a compression-set straddle packer has a multicomponent mandrel and a multicomponent sliding sleeve that reciprocates within a limited range on the multicomponent mandrel. A bias element constantly resists relative movement between the multicomponent mandrel and the multicomponent sliding sleeve.

A straddle packer has a floating auto-J sleeve that automatically shifts the straddle packer from a run-in condition to a stay-set condition after pumping of high-pressure fluid into the straddle packer in excess of a predetermined pump rate is terminated. In the stay set condition, packer elements of the straddle packer remain in sealing contact with a well casing or well bore into which the straddle packer has been run.

A cased bore straddle packer has an upper unload sub sleeve with fluid ports that are selectively aligned with corresponding ports in an upper unload sub mandrel component and a lower unload sub sleeve with fluid ports that are selectively aligned with corresponding ports in a lower unload sub mandrel component to permit fluid to be selectively dumped from the straddle packer. Control of the alignment of the respective ports is effected by manipulating an auto-J ratchet machined into a multicomponent mandrel of the straddle packer. The auto-J ratchet is controlled from the surface using completion string pull and push manipulations.

A straddle packer has a multicomponent mandrel with an active mandrel component. A pressure cylinder module reciprocates in opposite directions within a limited range over the active mandrel component. When fluid is pumped through a tubing string into the straddle packer, a piston of the pressure cylinder module is urged in one direction along an axis of the active mandrel component while a cylinder wall of the pressure cylinder module is urged in an opposite direction along the axis to simultaneously compress spaced-apart packers of the straddle packer to a packer set condition.

A fluid-pressure-set uphole end for a hybrid straddle packer has a multicomponent mandrel with a fixed piston and a multicomponent sliding sleeve with a sliding sleeve piston housing that houses the fixed piston. The multicomponent sliding sleeve reciprocates within a limited range on the multicomponent mandrel in response to fluid pressure pumped into a central passage of the multicomponent mandrel. An anti-set spring constantly resists relative movement between the multicomponent mandrel and the multicomponent sliding sleeve and returns the uphole end to a run-in condition when fluid pressure in the central passage is released.

A hydraulic pressure converter with a force multiplier converts fluid pressure pumped down a work string from the surface into a multiplied linear force. The multiplied linear force can be used to operate downhole tools to perform tasks requiring the application of linear force.

A compression-set straddle packer with fluid pressure-boosted packer set has a two-part multicomponent mandrel and a multicomponent sliding sleeve that reciprocates within a limited range on an upper part of the two-part multicomponent mandrel. A two-part lower packer element compression sleeve in a lower part of the two-part multicomponent mandrel reciprocates on a packer element piston mandrel component and pressure-boosts compression of a lower packer element when high-pressure fluid is pumped into the straddle packer. A bias element constantly resists relative movement between the multicomponent mandrel and the multicomponent sliding sleeve and balances pressure-boost between the lower packer element and an upper packer element supported by the upper part of the two-part multicomponent mandrel.
