A wearable device that tracks body movement is disclosed. The device includes a housing and a connection member. The connection member is coupled to the housing, and the connection member enables the device to be coupled to a user's body part. This body part is associated with the conductive matter. The device includes an RF sensor in the housing. The RF sensor oscillates at a preselected frequency. The RF sensor is tuned to resonate when the RF sensor is located a preselected distance from the conductive matter. As the conductive matter moves closer or farther from the RF sensor based on user movement, a resulting waveform generated based on data from the RF sensor is modified, and the resulting waveform is usable to determine how the user moved.

Examples are disclosed related to optically transparent antennas. One example provides a proximity sensor, comprising an electrically insulating substrate that is at least partially optically transparent, one or more antennas disposed on the electrically insulating substrate, each antenna comprising a film of a conductive material that is at least partially optically transparent, the one or more antennas comprising a proximity sensing antenna, and a resonant LC circuit electrically coupled to the proximity sensing antenna, the resonant LC circuit configured to output a signal responsive to a position of a surface relative to the proximity sensing antenna.

Systems and methods are provided for using a user wearable device having a first radar array configured to perform elevation mapping of a three-dimensional environment and a second radar array configured to perform azimuthal mapping of the three-dimensional environment which is divided into a plurality of voxels. Based on a detected triggering condition of the radar arrays, systems and methods are provided for dynamically updating at least a sub-set of voxels of the plurality of voxels in the three-dimensional environment at a new voxel granularity configured to facilitate an improvement in a resolution of one or more features included in the three-dimensional environment.

A method for training a neural network for facial expression recognition includes recognizing a plurality of digital human face models. For each of the plurality of digital human face models, a plurality of simulated facial expressions are simulated. Simulated capacitance measurements for an array of simulated radio frequency (RF) antennas are found for each of the plurality of simulated facial expressions. The simulated capacitance measurements for each simulated facial expression are provided as input training data to a neural network configured to output facial expression parameters based on input capacitance measurements.

Examples are disclosed that relate to utilizing a facial tracking sensor for controlling computer-generated facial expressions. One example provides a method of controlling computer-generated facial expressions. The method comprises receiving a sensor value acquired via a facial tracking sensor and determining an interpolated value for the sensor value within a value range. The value range corresponding to a blendshape range for a facial expression. The method further comprises determining a blendshape mapping based at least upon the interpolated value, determining expression data based at least upon the blendshape mapping, and providing the expression data to a device.

Controlling computer-generated facial expressions

Examples are disclosed that relate to sensing a position of a surface proximate to a resonant LC sensor. One example provides a method on a sensing device comprising one or more resonant LC sensors each configured to output a signal responsive to a position of a surface proximate to the resonant LC sensor. The method comprises, for each LC sensor, generating an oscillating signal on an antenna of the resonant LC sensor and detecting a near-field response of the resonant LC sensor at a selected frequency.

Examples are provided that relate to determining a capacitance based on a charge accumulated on a sense capacitor electrode. One example provides a head-mounted device comprising a facial-tracking sensor, a controller, and a charge sensing circuit connected to the facial-tracking sensor. The facial-tracking sensor includes a sense capacitor electrode configured to be positioned proximate to a surface of a face and form a capacitance based upon a distance between the sense capacitor electrode and the surface of the face, and the controller configured to apply a reference voltage to the sense capacitor electrode. The charge sensing circuit is configured to determine the capacitance of the sense capacitor electrode by determining an amount of charge accumulated on the sense capacitor electrode resulting from the reference voltage.

Determining charge on a facial-tracking sensor

To track an object with radar, and achieve greater than range resolution precision, the phase of a difference signal can be utilized and adjusted as the tracked object crosses between resolution ranges. Changes in the object's distance can be detected with greater than range resolution precision by utilizing the phase. Such changes can iteratively inform the determined distance across multiple phase cycles within a single distance range. As the movement of the object approaches, and then crosses, between resolution ranges, the phase as determined within an origin resolution range can be compared with a coincident phase within the destination resolution range and the difference can then be utilized to adjust the phase as the object then remains within the destination resolution range. Such phase adjustments can be applied across multiple resolution ranges, allowing for the tracking of an object, utilizing radar, while achieving greater than range resolution precision.

Embodiments are disclosed for a low-frequency detection and ranging. In an embodiment, an apparatus comprises: an open electrode; an alternating current (AC) voltage source configured to supply an excitation voltage to the open electrode at an excitation frequency; a resonant circuit coupled to the open electrode, the resonant circuit configured to oscillate when an object is within a detection distance of the open electrode; one or more processors configured to: obtain time domain samples of an output voltage of the resonant circuit when the resonant circuit is oscillating; convert the time domain samples into frequency domain samples; for each frequency domain sample, determine an amplitude difference and a phase difference as compared to an amplitude and phase of the excitation voltage; and determine a material class of the object based on the amplitude difference and the phase difference.

Low-frequency detection and ranging

Systems and methods are provided for tracking a passive controller system using an active sensor system within a mixed-reality environment. The passive controller system includes a body configured to be held in a hand of a user, as well as a plurality of retroreflectors that collectively provides at least 180 degrees of reflecting surface for reflecting a radar signal in at least 180 degrees of spherical range when the passive controller system is positioned within a predetermined distance from a source of the radar signal and with an orientation that is within the at least 180 degrees of spherical range relative to the source of the radar signal. Signals transmitted to the passive controller and reflected back from the passive controller are used to calculate the position and orientation of the passive controller system relative to the active sensor system.

A head-mounted mixed-reality (MR) device that is wearable by a user is disclosed. The MR device includes a user-facing display that displays user-directed content. The user-directed content is visible from a first position of a user who is wearing the MR device. The MR device further includes an outward-facing display that displays outward-directed content. The outward-directed content is visible from a second position that is external relative to the position of the user who is wearing the MR device.
