There is provided a magnetic recording medium including a base; a seed layer; a foundation layer; and a recording layer, the seed layer being disposed between the base and the foundation layer, having an amorphous state, including an alloy containing Ti, Cr and O, a percentage of Ti being 30 atomic % to 100 atomic % based on a total amount of Ti and Cr contained in the seed layer, and a percentage of O being 15 atomic % or less based on a total amount of Ti, Cr and O contained in the seed layer. Also, a production method thereof is provided.

Magnetic recording medium and method of producing the same

A method of fabricating a low-noise, high-output and large-capacity magnetic recording medium compatible with the AIT3 format in which a metal magnetic film is formed by the vacuum evaporation process under supply of oxygen is disclosed. In the vacuum evaporation process, the running speed of a non-magnetic support is controlled within a range from 150 to 200 m/min, and on thus continuously fast-running, non-magnetic support, a Co magnetic thin film is formed under supply of oxygen so as to achieve a coercive force Hc of the Co magnetic thin film of 100 to 115 kA/m, and a squareness ratio of 0.79 or larger.

Magnetic recording medium and method of fabricating the same

A base film for a magnetic recording medium including one surface, on which a magnetic layer can be formed, having a surface roughness of center line average roughness Ra of 10 nm or less, a ten-point average roughness Rz of 80 nm or less and a maximum height Rmax of 150 nm or less. The base film includes the other surface having a surface roughness of center line average roughness Ra of 4.5 to 20 nm, a ten-point average roughness Rz of 35 to 350 nm and a maximum height Rmax of 40 to 400 nm.

A magnetic recording medium having a thin magnetic metal film formed by vapor deposition under an atmosphere of an introduced oxygen gas. The thickness of the surface oxide film having the degree of oxidation of 50% or higher is maintained so as to be not higher than 5% of the total film thickness of the thin magnetic metal film. The magnetic recording medium is affected to a lesser extent by the surface oxide layer such that it is superior in magnetic properties, such as coercivity, and in electromagnetic properties.

A magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer formed by a thin magnetic metal layer and a carbon protective layer on a non-magnetic substrate; the surface of the carbon protective layer has first protrusions formed by first particles and second protrusions formed by second particles; the carbon protective film has a thickness in the range of 3 nm to 30 nm, while the first protrusions have the heights of 65 nm.+-.15 nm to 95 nm.+-.15 nm and the second protrusions have the heights of 18 nm.+-.5 nm to 28 nm.+-.5 nm; since the surface properties of the carbon protective film are controlled, the electro-magnetic conversion characteristics may be prevented from being lowered due to the spacing losses for improving the running durability of the recording medium.
