The present invention is directed to opening a spring roll pack in a controlled manner. A support surface is provided that is positioned to support the spring roll pack. A compression mechanism compresses the spring roll pack. As the spring roll pack is compressed, the spring roll pack is rotated while an accumulator winds wrapping material of the spring roll pack.

Spring-roll-pack opener

A roll () of compressed materials () is provided which has a sleeve () formed around a rotatable mandrel (). The sleeve () about which the materials () are rolled prevents the roll () from radially collapsing. The roll () may be removed from the mandrel () without tearing or telescoping of the material. In one embodiment the sleeve () is corrugated material (). The corrugated material () is around the rotatable mandrel () prior to the compressible material () being wrapped around the sleeve (). In another embodiment, the sleeve () comprises roll-packing material () laminated prior to being wound upon the mandrel ().

Roll packed compressible materials

An apparatus for fully automated roll packing of compressible mattress spring assemblies, including a radially collapsible mandrel for easy removal of finished rolls. In-fed spring assemblies are precompressed prior to winding on the mandrel, which is mounted to a pivotable arm to permit controlled compression of the spring assemblies against a fixed compression roller. The apparatus further includes devices for placing the finished rolls on pallets and wrapping pallets for shipping and storage.

Automated roll packing apparatus

A method of roll packing a variety of compressible materials is provided which prevents the rotatable mandrel about which the materials are rolled from radially collapsing. The method further provides for easy removal of the roll packed material without tearing or telescoping of the material. One embodiment of the present invention provides for wrapping a corrugated material around the rotatable mandrel prior to the compressible material being wrapped around the mandrel. In another embodiment, roll-packing material is laminated prior to being wound upon the mandrel before the compressible material is wrapped around the mandrel.

Method of roll packing compressible materials

An apparatus and method for roll packing a variety of compressible materials including a radially collapsible mandrel for easy removal of the roll packed material without tearing or telescoping of the material. The apparatus further includes an adjustable compression roller for setting the amount of compression in the rolled material and a roll handling device that facilitates removal of finished rolls from the apparatus. In one embodiment of the invention, a packing material dispenser supplies packing material to the in-fed compressible material as it is wound upon the mandrel.
