In an embodiment, a power distribution automation applications network includes multiple intelligent nodes in communication with each other, each having a hardware and software platform, with data processing and communications functionality. The intelligent nodes are integrated or embedded with grid components. The nodes each implement a part or whole of a grid operating system that includes a set of software applications for automated and supervisory monitoring, control, protection, and optimization of an electric power system with embedded distributed energy resources and distributed information resources. The grid operating system both manages the grid and facilitates the integration of distributed energy resources and distributed information resources in an electric power system.

Systems and methods for grid operating systems in electric power systems

A dynamic auto-adaptive volt/VAR control includes a memory storing program code, a communications channel operatively connected to a volt/VAR device, and a processor. The processor is configured to access a database of prior system knowledge and receive real-time measurements and power system operating condition information. The processor processes the prior system knowledge and the real time measurements and operating condition information to create a set of commands for voltage and reactive power control that will result in at least one of: (a) maintaining a voltage profile at the volt/VAR device within predefined limits, or (b) reducing electrical losses through voltage optimization. The processor causes the set of commands to be sent to the volt/VAR device.

Systems and methods for volt/VAR control in electric power management and automation systems

An integrated microgrid management system includes hardware operating as a node on an electrical power network. The node includes memory storing program code, a communications channel operatively connected to a plurality of controllable power devices, and a processor. In an embodiment, the processor is configured to implement a three-phase AC unbalanced model of a microgrid network, for both low and medium voltage networks. The processor is further configured to implement a topology processor that creates a map identifying controllable power devices that are connected to the network and how said controllable power devices are connected. The processor also implements an online power flow engine that uses the map and the three-phase AC unbalanced model of the network to generate commands to control the plurality of controllable power devices. Adaptive self-configuration logic and an optimization engine that performs multi-objective optimization are further disclosed.

Systems and methods for integrated microgrid management system in electric power systems

A distributed energy resource management system utilizes capacity on a distribution grid to host further distributed energy resource interconnections. In an embodiment, the system utilizes a data store including operational values associated with distributed electric resources on an electric power distribution network and a processor or processors coupled to the data store and in communication with the distributed electric resources. The computer processors are programmed, upon receiving one or more requests, to create 3-phase AC power flows for each location across the electric power distribution network. Optimizations of the 3-phase AC power flows to are used to calculate hosting capacity for each of the locations, for each of a plurality of time intervals, and each of a plurality of types of distributed energy resource, as a dynamic quantity that can change depending on time, day, season, and location. The hosting capacity is translated into calculated operational values which are used to determine and send a direction to actively manage distributed energy resources on the electric power distribution network.
