A torque converter including a thrust bearing having an extended race functioning as part of a seal gland for a dynamic seal thereby eliminating the need for an separate seal retainer plate. In some examples, the bearing provides the outer diameter sealing surface in addition to a retention feature for a spring energized seal.

External seal interface on raceway

A seal arrangement includes a housing defining a cavity and having a flow channel extending through the housing to the cavity. The seal arrangement further includes a seal plate non-rotatably connected to the housing. The seal arrangement further includes a biasing element disposed in the cavity and axially aligned with the flow channel. The biasing element is configured to permit fluid to flow radially therethrough into the flow channel. The seal arrangement further includes a first seal disposed in the cavity and between the biasing element and the seal plate, and a second seal disposed in the cavity and between the biasing element and a radially extending wall of the housing. The biasing element is configured to bias the first seal against the seal plate and to bias the second seal against the radially extending wall of the housing.

Seal arrangement

A hybrid module includes a rotor carrier having an axially extending portion and a radially extending portion; and a torque converter assembly arranged radially inside of the axially extending portion. The torque converter assembly includes: an impeller having an impeller shell non-rotatably connected to the axially extending portion; a turbine in fluid communication with the impeller and having a turbine shell arranged axially between the impeller and the radially extending portion; and a lock-up clutch. The lock-up clutch includes a plurality of clutch plates, a clutch plate carrier connected to at least some of the plurality of clutch plates, and a piston axially slidable along the clutch plate carrier to engage the plurality of clutch plates. The clutch plate carrier is non-rotatably connected to the turbine shell. An apply chamber is bounded in part by the turbine shell, the piston, and the clutch plater carrier.

Compact torque converter assembly for hybrid module

A damper assembly for a torque converter includes: an input flange; a cover plate; an intermediate flange; a hub flange; a first spring; and second spring; and a third spring. The input flange is arranged to receive a torque. The cover plate is connected to the input flange. The intermediate flange is axially spaced from the input flange and is connected to the cover plate radially outside of the input flange. The hub flange is disposed axially between the intermediate flange and the cover plate and is arranged to connect to a transmission input shaft. The first spring is arranged to be compressed by the input flange and the cover plate. The second spring is arranged to be compressed by the cover plate and the intermediate flange. The third spring is arranged to be compressed by the intermediate flange and the hub flange.

Torque converter damper assembly

A torque converter includes a front cover arranged to receive a torque and a lock-up clutch engaged with the front cover. The torque converter further includes a damper assembly engageable with the lock-up clutch. The damper assembly includes an inner spring assembly, an outer spring assembly arranged radially outside of the inner spring assembly, and a lower cover plate supporting the inner spring assembly. The lower cover plat includes a chamfer configured to retain the outer spring assembly in a spring window.

A torque converter assembly is disclosed herein. The torque converter assembly includes a thrust washer having a radially inner surface configured to engage against a drive shaft. A first axial surface of the thrust washer is configured to contact a cover. A second axial surface of the thrust washer is configured to contact a damper flange. The second axial surface of the thrust washer partially defines a first flow path. The thrust washer further comprises a second flow path configured to direct fluid in a first direction and a third flow path configured to direct fluid in a second direction. The thrust washer disclosed herein both provides an axial thrust bearing feature, and also provides three distinct flow paths or passages.
