Embodiments of the invention include ascribing a predetermined data record to a physical surface in the form of an imperfect aesthetic pattern of marks. An image showing a portion of the surface, when processed with a decoder, yields the predetermined, verified data record.

Use of imperfect patterns to encode data on surfaces

Texture extraction

A variety of methods and systems involving sensor-equipped portable devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers, are described. One particular embodiment decodes a digital watermark from imagery captured by the device and, by reference to watermark payload data, obtains salient point data corresponding to an object depicted in the imagery. Other embodiments obtain salient point data for an object through use of other technologies (e.g., NFC chips). The salient point data enables the device to interact with the object in a spatially-dependent manner. Many other features and arrangements are also detailed.

Salient point-based arrangements

A method of shape detection detects a figure with a contouring loop method that extracts at least one iso-contour polygon from a set of pixels in an image using a triangular lattice superimposed over the set of pixels of the image. Then starting from an original triangle, the iso-contour polygon is extracted by selecting an intensity chroma value within the set of pixels between three corners of a triangle to find a directed line segment that represent the crossing of the intensity value within the triangle, and an exit point of the directed line segment and a nearest triangle which contains the next directed line segment of the at least one iso-contour polygon are determined to create a first matrix of points on the at least one iso-contour polygon, until arriving at the original triangle.

Image data, such as from a mobile phone camera, is analyzed to determine a colorfulness metric (e.g., saturation) or a contrast metric (e.g., Weber contrast). This metric is then used in deciding which of, or in which order, plural different image recognition processes should be invoked in order to present responsive information to a user. Methods and systems for determining image processing operations relevant to particular imagery

We disclose a photogrammetry target that includes a background having a first color and a plurality of ovoid regions located on the background and having a second color contrasting the first color. We further disclose a method and system for detecting the target and processing image data captured from the target to discern therefrom at least one of a distance to the target, identification of the target, or pose of the target.
