An orthopedic rotary tool may include a drive system including a first rotary component and a second rotary component, an energy storage element, an actuator system including a first actuator element disposed on the first rotary component and a second actuator element disposed on the second rotary component, a coupling mechanism, and an output element. The coupling mechanism may be operable between coupled states and decoupled states. During operation, the energy storage element may accumulate rotational energy via the drive system and relative rotation between the first rotary component and the second rotary component may cause interactions between the first actuator element and the second actuator element. The interactions may transition the coupling mechanism between the coupled states and the decoupled states. When the coupling mechanism is in the coupled states, the energy storage element may be configured to deliver a torque impulse to the output element.

Orthopedic rotary tool

A rotary torque releaseor for orthopedic surgery includes an output anvil and a hammer that is capable of imparting linear and rotary force on the anvil. The anvil may be moveable on a leadscrew element to alternately generate energy in an energy storage means and to move along the leadscrew element to torque release the anvil. A viscoelastic mechanism or a dampening mechanism is used to reduce the reflected force and or torque during operation of the rotary torque releaseor. High frequency axial movements by the torque releaseor obviate the need for a surgeon to provide an external push force on the torque releaseor in order to perform a successful surgical operation.

An orthopedic rotary tool may include a motor, a first clutch, a first drive path, a second drive path, a second clutch, a rotating mass, and an output anvil. The orthopedic rotary tool may drive, by the motor and the first clutch, a first drive path that causes the output anvil to rotate at a speed. The orthopedic rotary tool may selectively enable, by the motor and the second clutch, a second drive path that causes the rotating mass to engage to the output anvil and increase the speed of the output anvil.

A rotary impactor for orthopedic surgery includes an output anvil and a hammer that is capable of imparting linear and rotary force on the anvil. The anvil may be moveable on a leadscrew element to alternately generate energy in an energy storage means and to move along the leadscrew element to impact the anvil. Intermediaries for a robot and robotic end effector for orthopedic surgery operatively couple a surgical robot to an end effector of such a robot. The intermediaries therefor comprise means to absorb and/or counteract reactionary forces from the end effector (which end effector may, as an example, be a surgical tool) and to reduce forces that would otherwise be imparted on the robot. An intermediary comprises a sleeve of shock-absorbing material that couples the robot and end effector. Another intermediary comprises an isolation connector that provides for an indirect coupling between the robot and the end effector and includes an absorption means for absorption or dispersion of reactionary forces from the end effector.

A rotary tool may include a motor, a first clutch, a first drive path, a second drive path, a second clutch, a rotating mass, and an output anvil. The rotary tool may drive, by the motor and the first clutch, a first drive path that causes the output anvil to rotate at a speed. The rotary tool may selectively enable, by the motor and the second clutch, a second drive path that causes the rotating mass to engage to the output anvil and increase a torque delivered to the output anvil.

A projectile includes a projectile housing with at least one compartment, an energizable energy storage means, a payload, a control circuit, and an initiator. The payload may be sequestered in one compartment of the projectile until the projectile is separated or opened. A ram element within the projectile may move within the projectile to cause the opening of a projectile. The projectile may include a means for activating the initiator via dynamic induction. In an example embodiment, the projectile comprises a coil that is operatively coupled to a magnetic element of a launcher. The projectile may be charged dynamically as via interaction between the coil and magnetic element as the projectile moves within the launcher.

Projectile construction, launcher, and launcher accessory

A launcher and projectile system include at least one magnet disposed on or within the launcher for charging a wire coil of the projectile to energize the projectile, thereafter having a housing of the projectile rupture, disintegrate, separate or otherwise have an opening created therein after launch to release a payload. In another embodiment, an accessory for a launcher and projectile is provided, the accessory comprising a magnet for charging a projectile that is launched by the launcher. The strength of magnetic field of the magnet may be adjusted for selective performance of the projectile.

A nonlethal projectile includes a payload for immobilizing and/or identifying a target. The projectile is capable of separating or otherwise opening after launch by a launcher to release the payload prior to impact with a target. The launcher is capable of initiating separation of the projectile. Opening may also be accomplished by a control circuit with a radio-frequency identification (RFID), where an RFID tag in the projectile causes the projectile to open at a specified distance from the launcher. The launcher may include a trigger and/or a safety switch to prevent the projectile from becoming armed until a certain parameter is met. A magazine or breech assembly of the launcher may energize the projectile prior to launch of the projectile.

Non-lethal projectile construction and launcher

A nonlethal projectile includes a debilitating material for immobilizing a target. The projectile is capable of self-separating or otherwise opening after launch by a launcher to release the debilitating material prior to impact with a target. The launcher is capable of initiating separation of the projectile. Opening may also be accomplished by a control circuit with a radio-frequency identification (RFID), where an RFID tag in the projectile causes the projectile to open at a user-specified distance from the launcher or by the force of launch on the projectile. A magazine may hold a plurality of projectiles and the various projectiles of the magazine may be configured to open at different distances and/or times after launch. The launcher may include a trigger and/or a safety switch to prevent the projectile from becoming armed until a certain parameter is met. The debilitating material may also be released through pores in the projectile.
