Eyewear including an optical functional member, control electronics, and a sealed electrical connective element connecting the electronics to the optical functional member. The connective element can directly connect the electronics to the optical functional member, or can connect through an intermediate contact, e.g., a plug-and-receptacle. The connective element can be muted from the electronics, around a rimlock of the eyewear to the optical functional member. The connective element can be a conductive compressible member, such as conductive rubber. In some embodiments, the connective element can be a multiconductor cable.

An ophthalmic device includes a rigid insert and an enclosure enveloping the rigid insert. The enclosure includes a cornea contact formed on a concave side of the enclosure. The cornea contact has a ring-shape that protrudes from the concave side of the enclosure and is disposed under at least a portion of the rigid insert. The ring-shape of the cornea contact includes a plurality of discontinuous sections. The plurality of channels are disposed on the concave side of the enclosure and each extend through a corresponding one of the discontinuous sections of the cornea contact.

Multi-component contact lens having posterior and anterior features

An apparatus comprising a liquid crystal material and a controller are described herein. The liquid crystal material is disposed between a first electrode and a second electrode opposite the first electrode. Molecules of the liquid crystal material assume a first orientation during a first state of the liquid crystal material and a second orientation during a second state of the liquid crystal material. The first orientation is different from the second orientation. The controller is coupled to the first electrode and the second electrode to perform operations. The operations include applying a first periodic waveform to the first electrode and a second periodic waveform to the second electrode to generate a drive waveform applied across the liquid crystal material. The operations further include changing a duty cycle of the drive waveform over a first time period to transition the liquid crystal material between the first state and the second state.

Ophthalmic devices including dynamic visual field modulation are disclosed herein. An example ophthalmic device may include a first liquid crystal cell including a first dichroic dye, a second liquid crystal cell including a second dichroic dye, wherein the first and second liquid crystal cells are in optical series so that incident light on the ophthalmic device passes through both the first and second liquid crystal cells, a photodetector positioned within the ophthalmic device to detect the incident light and coupled to output a data signal indicative of a property of the incident light, and control electronics coupled to receive the data signal from the photodetector in response to the incident light, and further coupled to independently and dynamically control the first and second liquid crystal cells based at least in part on the data signal.

Ophthalmic device including dynamic visual field modulation

In an embodiment, a multi-layer lens stack includes first liquid crystal material enclosed between a first diffractive lens structure and a first substrate surface having a first alignment layer disposed thereon and second liquid crystal material enclosed between a second diffractive lens structure and a second substrate surface having a second alignment layer disposed thereon. The first and second liquid crystal materials assume a homeotropic alignment relative to the first and second substrate surfaces, respectively, in a first mode. The first and second alignment layers are respectively configured to align the first liquid crystal material along a first direction and the second liquid crystal material along a second direction, substantially orthogonal to the first direction, in a second mode. The multi-layer lens stack has a first optical power in the first mode and a second optical power, different from the first optical power, in the second mode.

Dynamic diffractive liquid crystal lens

An ophthalmic device having posterior and anterior features are disclosed herein. An example ophthalmic device may include an enclosure having an insert disposed therein. The enclosure may include a cornea contact disposed on a posterior side and arranged to rest on a user's cornea outside of a central cornea area when the ophthalmic device is worn by a user. The enclosure further includes a channel formed in the posterior side, where the channel extends through the cornea contact from at least radially outside of the insert to an inner edge of the cornea contact.

Embodiments are disclosed of an eye-mountable device (EMD) including a lens enclosure including an anterior layer and a posterior layer sealed to the anterior layer. An anterior electrode is disposed within the lens enclosure on a concave side of the anterior layer, a posterior electrode is disposed within the lens enclosure on a convex side of the posterior layer, and an electrochromic element is disposed across a central region of the lens enclosure, wherein the electrochromic element separates the anterior electrode from the posterior electrode within the central region.

Electrochromic contact lens

An eye-mountable contact lens is provided that includes electronics encapsulated within a rigid, gas-permeable polymeric material. The rigid, gas-permeable polymeric material can be mountable to a corneal surface of an eye or can be disposed on or within a flexible polymeric material that is mountable to the corneal surface of the eye. The rigid, gas-permeable polymeric material can provide structural rigidity and protection to the electronics and/or can allow for long-term dry storage of a chemical sensor of the electronics. The rigid, gas-permeable polymeric materials of the provided eye-mountable devices can be formed by curing a precursor material on or around the electronics and subsequently removing portions of the polymeric material formed by the curing, e.g., to form a rigid, gas-permeable contact lens that at least partially encapsulates the electronics and that has a curved shape that is able to be mounted to a corneal surface of an eye.

A method of folding and unfolding an active accommodating intraocular lens system includes folding an active lens element along at least one folding line. The at least one folding line is defined by mechanical indentations disposed on a perimeter of the active lens element, and a first pair of the mechanical indentations define terminal ends of a first folding line extending between the first pair of the mechanical indentations. The active lens element is unfolded.
