The present invention operates to significantly reduce over or under drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the brain or spinal cord using an extraventricular drain (EVD) in the brain or lumbar drainage device (LDD) and automated intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring. The present invention attaches the drainage catheter of the EVD to a flow controller or valve which controls the flow of CSF from the drainage catheter and is electronically controlled by a stepper motor communicating with a pressure transducer receiving pressure signals indicating an ICP without the need for constant manual re-leveling.

The present invention provides a cerebrospinal fluid shunt system that monitors the intracranial pressures over a portion of a monitoring cycle to calculate short intervals of drainage for every monitoring cycle necessary to produce the desired pressure correction. The system operates to significantly reduce the time during which draining occurs allowing tissue surrounding the catheter to rebound from the catheter holes returning to its normal position for a sufficient amount of time to recover its normal shape.

A method for reconstructing images from a set of acquired projection views weights the value backprojected into each image voxel depending on whether the backprojected raysum passes through a highly attenuating region in the subject of the image. If the raysum exceeds an attenuation threshold value, the backprojected values are weighted to substantially reduce the contribution of that raysum to the reconstructed image and to thereby reduce streak artifacts otherwise produced by high attenuation objects such as metal surgical clips.

Shunts (valves) () for controlled flow of bodily fluids, such as cerebrospinal fluid, include a valve actuating member () (such as a piston ()) between inlet () and outlet () ports. The valve actuating member is biased toward a state wherein the valve is closed, and it includes a face adjacent the upstream side of the valve (and preferably isolated from the downstream side of the valve) whereby fluid pressure in the upstream side exerts an opening force on the face to urge the valve toward an open state. When the opening force on the valve exceeds the closing force by some amount, the valve actuating member moves the valve to the open state, allowing fluid flow through the fluid passage between the inlet and outlet ports.
