An electrode material for a lithium ion secondary battery and method of forming the same, the electrode material including composite particles, each composite particle including a primary particle including thermally disproportionated silicon oxide, and an envelope disposed on the surface of the primary particle. The envelope includes turbostratic carbon having a Raman spectrum having: a D band having a peak intensity (I) at wave number between 1330 cmand 1360 cm; a G band having a peak intensity (I) at wave number between 1530 cmand 1600 cm; and a 2D band having a peak intensity (I) at wave number between 2650 cmand 2750 cm, wherein a ratio of I/Iranges from greater than zero to about 1.0, and a ratio of I/Iranges from about 0.4 to about 2.

Thermally disproportionated anode active material including turbostratic carbon coating

Active material composite particles, an electrode including the composite particles, a lithium ion secondary battery including the electrode, and method of forming the same, in which the composite particles each include a core particle including an alkali metal or an alkali earth metal silicate, and a coating disposed on the surface of the core particle. The coating includes turbostratic carbon having a Raman spectrum having: a D band having a peak intensity (I) at wave number between 1330 cmand 1360 cm; a G band having a peak intensity (I) at wave number between 1580 cmand 1600 cm; and a 2D band having a peak intensity (I) at wave number between 2650 cmand 2750 cm, wherein a ratio of I/Iranges from greater than zero to about 1.1, and a ratio of I/Iranges from about 0.4 to about 2.

Graphene-containing metalized silicon oxide composite materials

An electrode material for a lithium ion secondary battery and method of forming the same, the electrode material including composite particles, each composite particle including: a primary particle including an electrochemically active material; and an envelope disposed on the surface of the primary particle. The envelope includes turbostratic carbon having a Raman spectrum having: a D band having a peak intensity (I) at wave number between 1330 cmand 1360 cm; a G band having a peak intensity (I) at wave number between 1530 cmand 1580 cm; and a 2D band having a peak intensity (I) at wave number between 2650 cmand 2750 cm. Anode active material including low-defect turbostratic carbon

The particles may each include a core and a buffer layer surrounding the core. An anode or negative electrode having a material matrix of carbon, graphene and an active element such as silicon or tin is described. The electrode is fabricated from an electrode slurry that does not utilize an organic binder. The electrode slurry comprises a combination of silicon and graphene oxide suspensions that is applied to a surface of a substrate such as a current collector. The layer of electrode slurry is heat treated to ensure adhesion of the layer of active electrode material to the surface of the current collector. The electrode may be incorporated within a lithium ion electrochemical cell.
