According to one embodiment, a method includes forming a structure by printing an ink, the ink including a glass-forming material, and heat treating the formed structure for converting the glass-forming material to glass. According to another embodiment, an ink composition includes a glass-forming material and a solvent.

Engineered feedstocks for additive manufacture of glass

A method includes acquiring particles doped with at least one analyte and forming a monolithic reference material. The method includes forming includes using the analyte-doped particles as feedstock particles in an additive manufacturing process. A product includes a monolithic reference material formed of Stöber particles doped with a trace element. A method includes acquiring particles doped with platinum group elements (PGEs). The method includes forming a monolithic reference material using the PGE-doped particles as feedstock particles in an additive manufacturing process.

Additive manufacturing of microanalytical reference materials

In one embodiment, a method includes depositing a material on a substrate. The material includes: a plurality of particles configured to complete a self-propagating and/or self-sustaining reaction upon initiation thereof, a solvent system, and one or more stabilizing agents.

Multifunctional reactive inks, methods of use and manufacture thereof

The present disclosure relates to a method involving a substrate having an interface layer, wherein the interface layer (IL) forms only an upper surface portion of the substrate, and a feedstock material (FM) placed on the IL. The method involves using a laser system to generate first and second beam components providing first and second power flux levels, respectively, where the second level is greater than the first. The FM is heated to a first level short of a melting point using the first beam component, at which point the particles of the FM begin to experience surface tension forces relative to the IL. Further heating the FM to a second level melts the FM and also melts the IL of the substrate, but where a portion of the IL remains unmelted by the second beam component as the particles of the FM and the IL are bonded together.

Laser pulse shaping for additive manufacturing

In one embodiment, a method includes dispersing a plurality of particles in a solution to form a dispersion; and adding a stabilizing agent to the dispersion in an amount sufficient to cause the dispersion to exhibit one or more predetermined rheological properties, wherein the particles are characterized by a core-shell configuration, wherein the core-shell configuration includes a core formed from a first material and a shell formed from a second material, wherein the first material and the second material form a combustible composition and/or a reactive binary composition that is configured to complete a self-propagating reaction and/or a self-sustaining reaction upon initiation thereof. Corresponding materials, and methods of using such materials, are also disclosed.

A semi-passive cooling system for a component exposed to a fluid flow utilizes a hierarchical vasculature and a sacrificial transpirant to cool the component. The component includes a body that defines a transpirant reservoir and the hierarchical vasculature. The transpirant is configured to transition between a solid phase and a vapor phase over an operating temperature range of the component.

Semi-passive cooling using hierarchical vasculature

The present disclosure relates to a system and apparatus having an optic and a cooling system for cooling the optic. In one example an optically addressed light valve forms the optic. The cooling system includes first and second windows on opposing surfaces of the optically addressed light valve which constrain a cooling fluid to flow over the opposing surfaces. The fluid pressure outside the optically addressed light valve is low enough that it does not compress a liquid crystal gap of the optically addressed light valve. The cooling fluid is also transparent to a high powered light beam which is projected through the first and second windows, and also through the optically addressed light valve, during an additive manufacturing operation.

Cooler for optics transmitting high intensity light

An ink, and products formed from the ink, formulated at least in part from ceramic particles. The ink is formulated so that it can be used in additive manufacturing processes to form three-dimensional printed bodies. The three-dimensional printed bodies can have graded density and can be infiltrated by an infiltration material.

Three-dimensional printing of ceramic materials

The present disclosure relates to an apparatus for additively manufacturing a product in a layer-by-layer sequence, wherein the product is formed using powder particles deposited on an interface layer of a substrate. A laser generates first and second beam components. The second beam component has a higher power level and a shorter duration than the first beam component. A mask creates a 2D optical pattern in which only select portions of the second beam components can irradiate the powder particles. The first beam component heats the powder particles close to a melting point, where the particles experience surface tension forces relative to the interface layer. While the particles are heated, the second beam component further heats the particles and also melts the interface layer before the surface tension forces can act on and distort the particles, enabling the particles and the interface layer are able to bond together.

In one embodiment, a magnet includes a plurality of layers, each layer having a microstructure of sintered particles. The particles in at least one of the layers are characterized as having preferentially aligned magnetic orientations in a first direction.

Production of permanent magnets using electrophoretic deposition

A method for forming a ceramic according to one embodiment includes electrophoretically depositing a plurality of layers of particles of a non-cubic material. The particles of the deposited non-cubic material are oriented in a common direction.

Samarium cobalt and neodymium iron boride magnets and methods of manufacturing same

Fabrication of functional polymer-based particles by crosslinking UV-curable polymer drops in mid-air and collecting crosslinked particles in a solid container, a liquid suspension, or an air flow. The particles can contain different phases in the form or layered structures that contain one to multiple cores, or structures that are blended with dissolved or emulsified smaller domains. A curing system produces ultraviolet rays that are directed onto the particles in the jet stream from one side. A reflector positioned on other side of the jet stream reflects the ultraviolet rays back onto the particles in the jet stream.

Fabricating structured particles through rapid hardening and tailored collection methods

A metal boride aerogel includes a three-dimensional aerogel structure comprising metal boride particles having an average diameter of less than one micron. A method is disclosed for forming a metal boride aerogel including dispersing boron nanoparticles in a solution of a metal salt, forming a boron-loaded metal oxide precursor gel using the dispersed boron nanoparticles in the solution of the metal salt, drying the boron-loaded metal oxide precursor gel to form a boron-loaded metal oxide precursor aerogel, and heating the boron-loaded metal oxide precursor aerogel to form a metal boride aerogel. The metal boride aerogel is essentially free of metal oxide.
