A downhole oscillation tool includes a Moineau-type positive displacement pulse motor and a valve assembly for use in a drill string. The pulse motor includes a rotor configured to nutate within the bore of a stator. The rotor has at least two helical lobes that extend the length of the rotor, and the stator bore defines at least three helical lobes that extend the length of the stator. The valve assembly includes a first valve plate connected to the bottom end of the rotor and abuts the second valve plate to form a sliding seal. The second valve plate is fixedly coupled to the stator and remains stationary. First valve ports extend axially through the first valve plate, and second valve ports extend axially through the second valve plate. The first valve ports and second valve ports intermittently overlap as the first valve plate slides across the second valve plate to create pulses in the drilling fluid which is pumped through the tool to power the motor and valve assembly. The tool can generate pulses of different amplitudes and different wavelengths in each rotational cycle. The tool further includes a drop ball assembly configured to activate and deactivate the tool.

Downhole oscillation apparatus

An enhanced elastomeric stator assembly and method of making the same is disclosed. The elastomeric stator may be structurally, thermally, and/or chemically enhanced through the incorporation of graphene particles, cross-linkable polymers, coupling agents that extend cross-links, and by the reduction of filler material. The graphene particles can be incorporated in functionalized or non-functionalized form or in a combination thereof, the functionalized graphene increasing the number of cross-links in the overall structure, thereby enhancing the structural robustness of the elastomeric stator. The compound can be formulated to have a relatively low viscosity and other characteristics that allow the material to flow through a mould cavity.

Graphene enhanced elastomeric stator

A progressive cavity positive displacement motor having a solid metal stator and a rotor having an elastomeric seal layer on its outer surface, as well as a method of manufacturing the motor. The elastomeric seal layer on the rotor can be formed by extruding the uncured elastomer, applying the extrusion to the metal rotor core and machining the cured elastomer to produce a uniform thickness seal layer. The elastomer can be made from a high molecular weight elastomer compound. Graphene additives can further enhance the performance characteristics of the elastomer.

An enhanced elastomeric stator assembly and method of making the same is disclosed. A progressive cavity type motor or pump including a stator insert with a reinforcing agent dispersed in a manner to improve properties of the stator insert. The reinforcing agent may be a fiber, nanotube, metal, ceramic, or polymer. A dispersing agent may be used to obtain a homogenous distribution. A magnetic reinforcing agent may be incorporated into a stator insert. The stator insert is subjected to a magnetic field to orient the magnetic reinforcing agent in a particular orientation. The magnetic field may also reposition the magnetic reinforcing agent within the stator insert. The stator insert may be formed by injection molding, transfer, or compression molding among other methods.
