Comb polymers are used as dispersants to increase the stability of colloidal suspensions containing multivalent or high concentrations of monovalent ions. Stabilized colloidal suspensions and methods of forming stabilized colloidal suspensions are described, including suspensions containing ceramic precursors or bioactive agents useful in forming ceramic substrates or pharmaceutical compositions, respectively.

Exemplary compositions comprise at least one aldopentonic acid, such as xylonic acid; and further comprise a lignin, a lignosulfonic acid or its salt, an additional sugar acid such as a aldohexonic acid or salt, a conventional admixture (such as a polyacrylate superplasticizer, a corrosion inhibitor, a set retard, a set accelerator, etc.), or a mixture thereof. Exemplary methods for obtaining microbiologically or enzymatically converted sugar acids are also described herein.

Beneficiated water reducing compositions

An exemplary admixture system for cementitious compositions, comprises a polycarboxylic acid type water reducer and a tertiary amine defoamer having an average molecular weight of 100-1500 and more preferably 200-750. The defoamer permits a stable admixture formulation and helps to achieve a controllable level of entrained air in a concrete mix. Cementitious compositions and methods for modifying the same, using the tertiary amine defoamers, are also described herein.

This invention relates to enhancing the compressive strength of cements after 1, 3, 7 and 28 days following hydration and to improving porosity and finished surfaces of the hardened cements and concretes made therefrom. The improved cements are prepared using certain hydroxylamine additives in amounts of up to 0.1% which preferably are added during grinding of the cement in which case the amines further act as grinding aids.

A thin-film heterostructure bilayer is formed on a substrate by a molecular self-assembly process based on the alternating deposition of a p-type doped electrically conductive polycationic polymer and a conjugated or nonconjugated polyanion or water soluble, non-ionic polymer has been developed. In this process, monolayers of electrically conductive polymers are spontaneously adsorbed onto a substrate from dilute solutions and subsequently built-up into multilayer thin films by alternating deposition with a soluble polyanion or water soluble, non-ionic polymer. In contrast to a deposition process involving the alternate self-assembly of polycations and polyanions, this process is driven by non-covalent bonded attractions (for example, ionic and hydrogen bonds) developed between a p-type doped conducting polymer and a polymer capable of forming strong secondary bonds. The net positive charge of the conducting polymer can be systematically adjusted by simply varying its doping level. Thus, with suitable choice of doping agent, doping level and solvent, it is possible to manipulate a wide variety of conducting polymers into uniform multilayer thin films with layer thicknesses ranging from a single monolayer to multiple layers.

A molecular self-assembly process based on the alternating deposition of a p-type doped electrically conductive polycationic polymer and a conjugated or nonconjugated polyanion has been developed. In this process, monolayers of electrically conductive polymers are spontaneously adsorbed onto a substrate from dilute solutions and subsequently built-up into multilayer thin films by alternating deposition with a soluble polyanion. In contrast to a deposition process involving the alternate self-assembly of polycations and polyanions, this process is driven by the electrostatic attractions developed between the p-type doped conducting polymer and the polyanion. The net positive charge of the conducting polymer can be systematically adjusted by simply varying its doping level. Thus, with suitable choice of doping agent, doping level and solvent, it is possible to manipulate a wide variety of conducting polymers into exceptionally uniform multilayer thin films with layer thicknesses ranging from a single monolayer to multiple layers.

A grinding aid composition suitable for grinding clinker into hydraulic cement powder, an improved grinding process and an improved cement product are disclosed. The grinding aid composition is composed of a mixture of at least one alkylene ether glycol and particulate carbon.
