A process for producing monoclinic celsian comprising the steps of forming a mixture of an alkoxide of silica, an alkoxide of aluminum, and a salt of barium; adding a catalyst of a fluorine containing compound to the mixture; calcining the catalyzed mixture; and, heat treating the calcined mixture. This process uses a sol-gel process to progressively increase the amount of monoclinic phase in relation to the hexagonal celsian. Additionally, a process for producing monoclinic strontium aluminosilicate is disclosed.

Sol-gel ceramic oxides

Metal ternary sulfides of the general formula MM'.sub.2 S.sub.4 are synthesized by introducing stoichiometric amounts of nitrate precursors in concentrated nitric acid and heating to approximate dryness to yield a homogeneous powder mixture. The mixture is then exposed to a gaseous H.sub.2 S atmosphere under controlled conditions to produce the desired sulfide.

Metal ternary sulfides

This invention comprises a method of synthesizing ternary phosphide compos of the general formula M(II)M(IV)P.sub.2 by fused salt electrolysis in which a melt powder mixture containing phosphorus compounds is introduced into an electrolytic apparatus containing a liquid group II metal cathode and a group IV metal or semiconductor source. Electrolysis occurs under controlled conditions in which oxygen is excluded as an impurity to produce the desired ternary phosphide compounds.
