Systems and methods for zone-based band mapping in a data storage device are disclosed. In one embodiment, a device may comprise a first data storage medium including a first band of tracks and a second band of tracks, each band of tracks including multiple adjacent tracks that are at least partially overlapped. The device may further comprise a processor configured to receive a write command to store received data to the first band of tracks, read previously stored data from the first band of tracks, modify the previously stored data with the received data to generate first modified data, write the first modified data to the second band of tracks, and assign a first data storage location indicator previously associated with the first band of tracks to the second band of tracks.

Zone based band mapping

Systems and methods of selective data mirroring are disclosed. In a particular embodiment, a device is disclosed that includes a data storage medium and a controller operably coupled to the data storage medium. The controller configured to selectively enable a data mirroring function to copy data in a first data storage location of the data storage medium to one or more second data storage locations of the data storage medium when the one or more second data storage locations do not have valid primary data stored to them.

System and method of selective data mirroring in a data storage device

A disc drive has transducers supported by an actuator to fly proximate data tracks on surfaces of rotating information storage discs. Each of the discs is partitioned into concentric regions. A control system arranges the deposition of data in write operations to the tracks on the disc surfaces, as data is written to the discs, such that the data is sequentially organized both on the tracks and within each of the regions. The control system writes data from a track adjacent a first region boundary in a first direction to a second region boundary until all tracks in a region are full. The control system executes a head switch between adjacent surfaces of the discs. The write sequence is repeated in each adjacent region until all regions are full. The resulting trapezoidal serpentine pattern of actuator movement and head switches is repeated until all of the write operations are complete.

Apparatus and method for writing data to an information storage disc

Methods and control systems for delaying a seek once a command is received to further load a buffer with read look ahead data are described. The methods involve calculating when or at what point the prefetching should cease and a seek should be initiated so that the actuator arm arrives at a new track just in time to begin reading the target data. The control systems include a processor that instructs a servo control to hold the actuator on a track while data is prefetched and loaded into a buffer until a seek must be initiated to allow the actuator to arrive at the new track just in time to begin reading the new target data.
