A lubricating oil composition including a major amount of a base oil, one or more calcium-containing detergents to provide at least 1000 ppmw of calcium, and one or more silicon-containing compound(s) to provide at least 50 ppmw of silicon to the lubricating oil composition, all based on the total weight of the lubricating oil composition, wherein a ratio of ppmw of silicon provided by the one or more silicon-containing compound(s) to the lubricating oil composition to the ppmw of calcium provided by the one or more calcium-containing detergent(s) to the lubricating oil composition is from 0.02 to 1. Methods of using these compositions and silicon-containing detergents are also described.

Lubricant formulations with silicon-containing compounds

Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines require gasoline particulate filters (GPFs) as a key component of the emissions control system to reduce particulate emissions. GPFs are known to have poor initial performance, with performance increasing after the filter develops a cake. This poor initial performance make it impossible to accurately assess vehicle emissions performance at the mileage requirements for vehicle certification. Compositions and methods are disclosed to improve filtration efficiency in a fresh or low mileage GPF.

Gasoline particulate filters with high initial filtering efficiency and methods of making same

Particulate filters are used to remove particulate matter such as soot and ash in the emissions control systems of vehicles, including gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. Methods are provided to predict the long-term performance and durability of emissions control systems having particulate filters. The methods account for factors such as thermal aging, soot accumulation and regeneration, and ash loading.

Predictive methods for emissions control systems performance

A copolymer including ethylene units and units of one or more Calpha-olefins. The copolymer has a number average molecular weight of less than 5,000 g/mol, as measured by GPC. The ethylene content of the copolymer is less than 80 mol %. At least 70% of molecules of the copolymer have an unsaturated group, and at least 70% of said unsaturated groups are located in a terminal vinylidene group or a tri-substituted isomer of a terminal vinylidene group. The copolymer has a crossover temperature of &#x2212;20&#xb0; C. or lower and/or a certain ethylene run length. Also disclosed are a method for making the copolymer and polyolefins plasticized with 1-40 wt % of the copolymer.

Microstructure-controlled copolymers of ethylene and C-Calpha-olefins

Ethylene-C-Calpha olefin copolymers, dispersants and lubricating oils/fuel compositions incorporating dispersants, and related methods are generally described herein. The copolymer may comprise ethylene-derived units and C-Calpha-olefin-derived units. The C-Calpha-olefin-derived units may have a carbon number from three to ten. For example, the C-Calpha-olefin-derived units may be propylene-derived units.

In order to blend fuels to meet specific regulatory and industry requirements, for instance octane requirements, different octane blending components can be used. One added component includes a composition of higher aromatics content. Unfortunately, this aromatic content may increase the particulate emissions of an internal combustion engine when the high aromatic fuel is combusted in that engine. As explained herein, reducing the aromatics content and replacing that octane increasing requirement with an alternative octane enhancer results in a formulated fuel that will have lower particulate emissions in the real-world driving of that engine as compared with a fuel having higher aromatic content.

Fuel composition and method of formulating a fuel composition to reduce real-world driving cycle particulate emissions

The present disclosure relates to a gasoline combustion improver comprising an organic nitro compound with C&#x2014;NObond dissociation energy of about 60 to about 80 Kcal/mol of compound, wherein the organic nitro compound is selected from the group consisting of nitro-aromatics, heteroatom aromatic ring compounds, heteroatom nonaromatic ring compounds, and nitrated furfuryls, and wherein the organic nitro compound is not nitrotoluene or dinitrotoluene.

Compositions comprising combustion improvers and methods of use thereof

A nanocatalyst, dual catalyst and methods for improving the efficiency and output of a biomass gasification process are provided where the catalysts comprise a volatile organometallic compound(s) and/or a nanoalloy catalyst. By the catalyst and method, a very high biomass gasification conversion efficiency of over 85% can be achieved. The subject nanocatalyst cracks and gasifies lignin, which is generally inert in conventional gasification, at relatively low gasification temperatures. The subject disclosure also provides a means to increase gas yields and lower lignin content in the resulting product relative to conventional gasification. Alternatively, oil production may be increased, if desired. Moreover, the resulting gas may achieve a Fischer-Tropsch reactor favorable H:CO ratio of about 9:1. The energy input to the gasification is correspondingly reduced to reduce costs and the environmental impact associated with the gasification process.

Nanoparticle catalyst compounds and/or volatile organometallic compounds and method of using the same for biomass gasification

The present invention relates to a method for improving biomass gasification. By the present invention, volatile organometallics are contacted with a biomass before or during gasification. By this method, the biomass improves gas yields while reducing solid (tar) and liquid yields. In addition, the volatile organometallics interact with lignin in the biomass to produce methanol, which, in turn, results in a stable liquid or oil by-product or otherwise stabilizes the gasification process of the biomass. The presently disclosed method can also lead to increased syngas production and is potentially COneutral. The energy input to the gasification is correspondingly reduced to reduce costs and the environmental impact associated with the gasification process.

Method of using volatile organometallics as biomass gasification catalysts

An emissions control system for the after treatment of a fuel combustion process exhaust stream includes an exhaust passageway. The exhaust passageway allows for passage of an exhaust stream containing exhaust byproducts from the combustion of a fuel that includes a manganese compound. The exhaust stream includes a manganese compound which complexes with at least one of the exhaust byproducts.
