A multiple-sided medical device comprises a frame comprising wire or other resilient material and having a series of bends and interconnecting sides. The device has both a flat configuration and a second, folded configuration which a generally serpentine shape. The device is pushed from a delivery catheter into the lumen of a duct or vessel and may include one or more barbs for anchoring purposes. A full or partial covering of fabric or other flexible material such as DACRON, PTFE, or a collagen-based material such as small intestinal submucosa (SIS), may be sutured or attached to the frame using heat or pressure welding crimping, adhesive, or other techniques to form an occlusion device, a stent graft, or an implantable, intraluminal valve such as for correcting incompetent veins in the lower legs and feet.

Implantable vascular device

A multiple-sided medical device comprises a frame comprising wire or other resilient material and having a series of bends and interconnecting sides. The device has both a flat configuration and a second, folded configuration which a generally serpentine shape. The device is pushed from a delivery catheter into the lumen of a duct or vessel and may include one or more barbs for anchoring purposes. A full or partial covering of fabric or other flexible material such as DACRON, PTFE, or a collagen-based material such as small intestinal submucosa (SIS), may be sutured or attached to the frame to form an occlusion device, a stent graft, or an implantable, intraluminal valve such as for correcting incompetent veins in the lower legs and feet.

DNA encoding a therapeutically suitable glutaminase has been molecularly cloned. This allows one to obtain a polypeptide which is a therapeutically suitable glutaminase free of contaminating endotoxin. It has been found that this polypeptide is a potent anti-viral agent and when coupled to an anti-tumor monoclonal antibody is a potent anticancer agent. The glutaminase of the present invention is particularly useful for treating lung, breast and colon cancer cells and in the treatment of HIV-infected cells.

Method for producing therapeutically suitable glutaminase

Histidine ammonia lyase (HAL) isolated from Corynebacteriaceae can decrease serum histidine levels, induce accumulation of urocanic acid, and is not inhibited by L-histidinol. As a result, histidine ammonia lyases similar to the one isolated from Corynebacteriaceae are uniquely suitable for combination therapy with L-histidinol to treat histidine- and/or histamine-dependent pathologies, for example, infectious viruses, such as human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), as well as cancers.

Cloning, overexpression and therapeutic use of bioactive histidine ammonia lyase

A silver implantable medical device includes a structure adapted for introduction into the vascular system, esophagus, trachea, colon, biliary tract, or urinary tract; at least one layer of a bioactive material posited on one surface of structure ; and at least one porous layer posited over the bioactive material layer posited on one surface of structure and the bioactive-material-free surface. Also included is a layer or impregnation of silver . Preferably, the structure is a coronary stent. The porous layer is comprised of a polymer applied preferably by vapor or plasma deposition and provides a controlled release of the bioactive material. It is particularly preferred that the polymer is a polyamide, parylene or a parylene derivative, which is deposited without solvents, heat or catalysts, merely by condensation of a monomer vapor. Silver is included as a base material, coating or included in a carrier, drug, medicament material utilized with the implantable stent.

Genetically engineered glutaminase and its use in antiviral and anticancer therapy

A silver implantable medical device 29 includes a structure 12 adapted for introduction into the vascular system, esophagus, trachea, colon, biliary tract, or urinary tract; at least one layer 18 of a bioactive material posited on one surface of structure 12; and at least one porous layer 20 posited over the bioactive material layer 18 posited on one surface of structure (12) and the bioactive-material-free surface. A stone retrieval basket having superelastic metallic alloy wires attached to the distal end of an inner elongaged member tube for retrieving calculi and crushing them against an outer introducer tube percutaneously inserted into a patient. The basket comprises kink-resistant superelastic metallic alloy wires such as nitinol forming a bulbous shape for capturing calculi therein. The ends of the superelastic wires of the basket are attached to the distal end of a inner elongated member tube with the aid of sleeves crimped thereon, which are soldered or spot welded in recesses about the distal end of the inner tube. The outer tube is percutaneously inserted into the biliary or urinary system in which the basket is then inserted to capture large-sized stones. A peel-away sheath is also included to introduce the basket and inner elongatged member tube into the outer introducer tube. A dilator member, which is extendable through the passageway of the inner tube, removes any residual debris from the tube that may be left during the stone removal procedure.

Medical retrieval basket

A medical retrieval basket having superelastic metallic alloy wires attached to the distal end of an inner elongated member tube for percutaneously capturing and removing calculi from a cavity or duct of a patient. The basket comprises kink-resistant superelastic metallic alloy wires such as nitinol which forms a bulbous shape for capturing calculi therein. The ends of the superelastic wires of the basket extend through the passageway of the inner elongated member tube and are attached to the proximal end of the tube. An outer elongated member tube is percutaneously inserted into the biliary or urinary system. The inner member tube is inserted through the outer member tube into a duct, cavity or organ of the patient. The distal ends of both the inner and outer member tubes have a predetermined longitudinal curvature for controlling the positioning of the basket and the tubes within the patient. A sleeve is provided at the proximal end of the inner member tube for limiting the insertion thereof in the outer member tube.
