An improved respirator nebulizer for introducing a water and/or medication aerosol into a flow from a respirator to a patient's respiratory system. The present invention includes a manifold body, wherethrough is passed a demand respirator low pressure main flow to a patient, and includes ducting for passing a high pressure nebulizer flow from the repirator to break up liquid from and within a cup reservoir that is scoured from that reservoir into an aerosol and encapsulated into the main flow. The manifold body, its component elements and the cup reservoir are all preferably formed by conventional molding methods and equipment, with the manifold body and component assemblies intended to be disposable after short usage or, alternatively, can be constructed to be sterilized for additional usage, with cup reservoir intended to hold a pre-measured and mixed liquid and could be disposable after a single use. The cup reservoir is arranged to be separately installed and sealed to an appropriate seat formed on the manifold body, with either the cup reservoir lip or seat incorporating grooving therein that, when the cup reservoir is attached to the manifold body, serves as liquid transport lines and nozzles wherethrough liquid from the cup reservoir is passed and sprayed. The nozzle flows impinge on or strike one another, breaking the sprays into fine particulate aerosol that is scoured from the cup reservoir by that high pressure flow and moved into the main flow. The manifold preferably incorporates a two position mode valve that, in one position, passes the high pressure flow to both the nebulizer portion and to an exhalation valve, and in the other mode valve position channels the high pressure flow to perform nebulization functions only, which mode valve positioning is dependent upon the type of respirator employed with the present invention, the present invention being suitable for use with the most common Bird.RTM. and Bennett.RTM. respirators.

A nozzle formed by the mating of two separable parts, a housing and a plug insert, having smaller diameter orifice formed at a first mating interface of these two parts, a Venturi chamber connected to the smaller orifice, being formed at a second mating interface of these two parts and a larger diameter orifice extending through the plug insert part being connected to the Venturi chamber.

Method of manufacturing a nebulization-humidification nozzle

A fluid heating apparatus for use in medical applications in the heating of water for use in a nebulizer is provided having a heated passageway for connecting between a water reservoir and a nebulizer head for heating only the water being used immediately before use. The passageway may be formed at the interfacing surfaces of a housing and an insert. The insert may be coated with a biocompatible material which possesses certain heat conductive properties while providing a water seal. A channel may transverse the surface of the coating to establish the passageway. An electrical heater may be located within the insert.

A water and other fluids supply container is provided for use in the medical field with oxygen humidifiers and nebulizers and the like. Included may be a collapsible plastic reservoir having an attachment mechanism for mating to the mist generating apparatus. An access opening to the interior of the bag above the normal fluid level preferably exists at the attachment mechanism. A passageway may extend into the bottom of the bag to access the fluid located therein.

A convertible function water vapor generating device is provided for use with medical oxygen delivery systems for creating a nebulizing mist suspended in the oxygen flow and for creating a bubble humidified oxygen flow. An oxygen handling component may be connected to a refillable and/or disposable water container which may be prefilled and which preferably has a passageway for directly accessing the bottom of the water supply held therein. A heater for heating water accessed may reside as part of the handling component which also may contain a nebulization nozzle and a nebulizer-humidifier function control.
