The present invention provides a method of increasing the surface energy of an article having a polymeric surface increasing the relative amount of nitrogen atoms or oxygen atoms within a portion of the surface to form a nitrogen or oxygen enriched surface layer. The method of the invention is advantageously applied to a vehicle body frame to facilitate adhesion of a windshield. In another embodiment of the invention a method for inhibiting sealer redeposition is provided in which a plastic component in an automobile is treated prior to being subjected to the various paint preprocessing baths.

Environmentally friendly reactive fixture to allow localized surface engineering for improved adhesion to coated and non-coated substrates

According to at least one aspect of the present invention, a coated substrate surface is provided. In at least one embodiment, the coated substrate surface includes a substrate surface, and a high-velocity impact polymer reaction coating for promoting adhesive bonding, the coating having first and second opposing surfaces, the first opposing surface being adjacent to the substrate surface. In at least another embodiment, the high-velocity impact polymer reaction coating is formed by depositing a polymer reaction compound onto the substrate surface with a high-velocity impact device at a velocity in the range of 10 to 200 meters per second, the polymer reaction compound being formed from substantially random fragmentation of prepolymer molecules.

Method of coating a substrate for adhesive bonding

A system is provided for plasma treating a plastic component having an exterior surface and an inside surface. The system comprises at least one fixture. The fixture includes a support structure, a plurality of locating features, and a plurality of holding devices which cooperate to position a portion of the exterior surface to within a specified tolerance. The system further comprises at least one APAP nozzle configured to move relative to the exterior surface along a path, wherein the APAP nozzle directs a plasma jet onto the portion producing a functionalized polymer layer covering the portion.

A method for depositing a coating onto a glass substrate for adhesive bonding. The process comprises depositing a coating where the surface is cleaned during a first time period, and depositing a high-velocity impact polymer reaction coating on the surface at ambient air pressure during a second time period using an atmospheric pressure air plasma. The coated glass can be bonded using a CASE compound, consisting of coatings, adhesives, sealants, elastomers, and combinations thereof. The opposing surface of the CASE compound is adjacent to a frame, such as an automotive vehicle windshield flange.

This invention is directed to a thermoplastic ionic conductor composition comprising a polymeric adduct having an acrylic backbone and polyether side chains, and an alkali metal salt. The polymeric adduct is made by reacting a particularly defined hydroxy-functional acrylic copolymer with polyether monoisocyanate. This invention is directed to an electrorheological fluid which comprises nonconductive particulate susceptible to ionic and electronic polarization dispersed in a nonconductive fluid. The nonconductive particulate are a phenoxy organometallic salt. This salt is the reaction product of an esentially stoichiometric amount of phenoxy salt soluble or dispersible in a liquid and a divalent metal salt. The phenoxy salt can be made by reacting diphenol material with active metal or active metal hydroxide.

Novel thermosetting, solvent-based, crosslinkable and chain-extendable coating compositions are provided. The coating compositions are suitable to be formulated as high solids coating compositions and comprise bis-diene oligomers, bis-dieneophile oligomers, crosslinking agent, organic solvent and, preferably, catalyst. A crosslinkable composition of matter is provided, which comprises certain diene functional aminoepoxy resin and certain functional aminoepoxy blocked dieneophile resin, which two resins are co-reactive at elevated cure temperature. The diene functional aminoepoxy resin comprises the reaction product of diepoxide with amine functional diene chain extending reactant and, optionally, monofunctional end-capping reactant such as monohydroxy functional diene. The blocked dieneophile functional aminoepoxy resin comprises the reaction product of diepoxide with amine functional blocked dieneophile chain extending reactant and, optionally, monofunctional end-capping reactant such as monohydroxy functional blocked dieneophile. The composition may further comprise crosslinking agent reactive with hydroxy functionality of the resins. The crosslinkable composition of matter is useful in coating and other applications, especially solvent based primer coating compositions and cathodic electrocoating compositions.

High solids, solvent-based resin composition comprises novel chain-extendable, crosslinkable urethane modified polyhydroxy oligomers, crosslinking agent and, preferably, catalyst(s). The composition cures at elevated temperature to provide a coating on a substrate, such as steel, which is highly resistant to corrosion, humidity and solvents and provides corrosion protection for the substrate. The novel oligomers can be the reaction product of a polyol with a half-blocked diisocyanate, wherein said polyol comprises three or more hydroxy, and the half-blocked diisocyanate comprises the reaction product of an organic diisocyanate with approximately one molar equivalent of a monofunctional blocking agent.

Chain-extendable crosslinkable urethane modified polyhydroxy oligomers

A self-crosslinkable resin and composition of matter comprising same is provided, which resin comprises certain diene functional blocked dieneophile functional aminoepoxy resin, which resin is self-crosslinkable at elevated cure temperature. The diene functional blocked dieneophile functional aminoepoxy resin comprises the reaction product of diepoxide with amine functional diene chain extending reactant, mono-secondary amine functional blocked dieneophile and, optionally, monofunctional end-capping reactant such as mono-secondary amine functional diene and mono-secondary amine functional blocked dienophile. The composition may further comprise crosslinking agent reactive with hydroxy functionality of the resin. The crosslinkable composition of matter is useful in coating and other applications, especially solvent-based primer coating compositions and cathodic electrocoating compositions.
