Seal bearing assembly for use in a solid waste comminutor

An integrated system for diverting and reducing the size of waste materials in an effluent stream comprising a frame having a bottom housing and a top housing and mountable in the stream. A grinder unit is mounted to the frame bottom housing and comprises a cutter assembly positioned in the stream and a drive mechanism coupled to the cutter assembly to rotate the cutter assembly. The drive mechanism may be electric or hydraulic. A screen unit is mounted to the frame. It may be a single screen or dual screens. The screen unit comprises a cylindrical screen rotating on a screen shaft having a screen shaft mounted on bottom housing of the frame and supporting the cylindrical screen. A drive assembly operable couples the drive mechanism to the screen shaft to rotate the cylindrical screen as the cutter assembly rotates. In operation with the screen unit positioned adjacent to the grinder unit it diverts solids in the effluent stream toward the grinder unit for size reduction. An auger-screen may be placed downstream for removal of large solids after size reduction.

Each bearing module comprises an end housing, and a pair of insertable preassembled bearing assemblies mountable in each of said end housings. One bearing assembly has a thru-hole for journaling a first shaft for rotation and a second bearing assembly has a thru-hole for journaling a second shaft for rotation. The housing has an inspection port at the top to allow for tightening of the cutter stack. The device employs side rails having interleaved and smooth portions to guide solids to the cutter stack and to accelerate the flow of fluid around the outside of the cutters.

A solid waste handling system for screening and grinding solids entrained in an influent liquid stream flowing within a chute between laterally spaced vertical sidewalls utilizes at least one solids diverter horizontal rotating screen unit fixedly mounted within the chute and at an angle to the influent liquid stream with an endless loop open mesh screen mounted for rotation on a frame assembly such that one upstream face of the screen is vertical and moves horizontally across the stream in a direction towards the downstream offset grinder unit. The grinder unit has a housing with an upstream facing inlet port and mounts internally within the housing stacked interengaging shredding members for rotation about their axes in the path of flow of the solids bearing influent. Motors mounted to the units above the influent liquid stream level drive the screen and shredding members of respective units. Multiple screen units and multiple grinder units may be employed with the multiple screen units in stacked array, in end overlapping position, and with the endless screens driven to deflect solids towards one or more grinder units offset below the most downstream screen unit of the array.

Two interacting stacks of peripheral overlapping shredding members of disk form are mounted on substantially parallel shafts and positioned transversely to the direction of waste material passing through a comminutor casing. The casing opens upstream and downstream side for introducing liquid borne waste to the chamber and for discharging the comminuted waste therefrom after shredding, respectively. The casing is closed off by a pair of imperforate side rails, each side rail is slotted to form a series of inwardly projecting planar fingers having front edges of circular arc form facing the periphery of the rotating cutting element disks and having a radius larger than the radius of the disks and being spaced slightly therefrom. The array of fingers extend over the complete height of the stack shredding members. This facilitates greater flow of the liquid through the comminution chamber via slots between the fingers, carrying fine solids to enhance comminution.

A replaceable wear sleeve cartridge fixedly mounted to a housing bore carries internally the fixed race of an anti-friction bearing and a static seal race. The wear sleeve cartridge defines with a labyrinth preseal bushing fixed to the shaft, the basic elements of a labyrinth preseal and additionally resiliently couples through a seal wedge, a rotating seal race whose end face is both fluid pressure and resiliently biased against the end face of the annular static seal race.

A neoprene boot fixes a static race of a rotary shaft seal within a housing bore. An annular rotating race bears a carbon insert laterally mated to the radial face of the static race. A bushing borne by the rotating shaft supports a neoprene seal sleeve of inverted T-shape configuration including a flexible lip reinforced with a steel ring which is pressed by distortion and fluid pressure against a rotating sleeve, to which the sleeve base is locked. The rotating race presses against the static race to maintain a high integrity fluid tight seal between the rotating shaft and the fixed housing.
