In the process of this invention bis-(cyanoethyl) tin dihalides are prepared by reacting metallic tin with acrylonitrile and hydrogen halide in an inert solvent.

Compositions for stabilizing a vinyl or vinylidene halide polymer or chlorinated polyethylene which comprise a major proportion of (a) at least one ester tin compound, for example .beta.-carboalkoxyethyl tin mercaptides, .beta.-carboalkoxyethyl tin mercapto-acid esters and the like and a minor proportion of (b) at least one unsubstituted or alkyl substituted o-dihydric phenol, such as catechol, t-butyl catechol and 2,3-dihydroxy naphthalene. These compositions synergistically contribute to the heat stability of vinyl or vinylidene halide polymers or chlorinated polyethylene. The performance of the compositions disclosed is particularly improved as regards resistance to early discoloration and long term heat stability of the ester tin compounds contained in them. Moreover, the amounts in which the compounds need be used for stabilization can be kept relatively small.

Organotin compounds having the formula R.sub.3 SnX or R.sub.4 Sn are prepared by reacting metallic zinc with organotin compounds having the formula RSnX.sub.3 or R.sub.2 SnX.sub.2, wherein X stands for chlorine, bromine, iodine or an alkyl carboxylate group having the formula C.sub.p H.sub.2p+l COO, wherein p=1-18, and R represents an organic group. This invention provides a process for preparing organotin trihalides which comprises reacting tin tetrahalide with an organotin dihalide of general formula R.sub.2 SnHal.sub.2 wherein Hal denotes a halogen atom and R represents the group ##STR1## wherein R', R', R'' and R'' are each independently a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or substituted alkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms with the proviso that at least one of R' and R' contains adjacent to the group HC-- a carbonyl group which forms a part of an acid group, ester group, aldehyde group, acid halide group or ketone group, and recovering the organotin trihalide of formula RSnHal.sub.3 thereby formed.

An organotin dihalide having the formula ##STR1## OR A MIXTURE OF THE DIHALIDE AND AN ORGANOTIN TRIHALIDE IS PREPARED BY REACTING METALLIC TIN WITH AN OLEFIN HAVING THE FORMULA ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.4 are hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radical and at least one of R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 contains an oxygen-containing group with a carbonyl group adjacent to the olefinic double bond and Hal is a halogen. The organotin dihalide or mixture thereof with a trihalide is reacted with an acid or mercaptan to produce a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride polymers and the like.

Organotin trihalides are prepared by reacting in a polar solvent a stannous halide, hydrogen halide and an olefin of the formula ##STR1## where R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are an alkyl group, an oxygen-containing hydrocarbon group or a hydrogen atom and at least one of the groups contains a carbonyl group adjacent to the carbon-carbon double bond.
