Functionalized polymers and methods of making

Organic, small pore area materials ('SPMs') are provided comprising open cell foams in unlimited sizes and shapes. These SPMs exhibit minimal shrinkage and cracking. Processes for preparing SPMs are also provided that do not require supercritical extraction. These processes comprise sol-gel polymerization of a hydroxylated aromatic in the presence of at least one suitable electrophilic linking agent and at least one suitable solvent capable of strengthening the sol-gel. Also disclosed are the carbonized derivatives of the organic SPMs.

Disclosed is a process for the production of organic aerogels, whereby the organic solvent in which the gel is immersed is directly extracted supercritically without the need for exchange with a low temperature solvent (i.e., CO.sub.2) prior to extraction of the pore fluid.

Process for high temperature production of organic aerogels

Internal conformal antenna arrays are mounted in aircraft aerosurface and fuselage primary and secondary load carrying structures. These radar transmitting structures are dual role structures capable of efficiently transmitting and receiving radio frequency energy, and efficiently carrying and transmitting aerodynamic loads. The internal conformal antenna arrays are mounted in the leading and trailing edges of the wings, in the empennage, and behind the outer shell of the fuselage. In order to achieve radar transmitting structures capable of transmitting radio frequency energy and meeting primary aerodynamic load carrying requirements, ceramic, quartz, or silicone-carbide fiber-reinforced organic matrix composites are combined with advanced structures technology.

A wing structure for controlling hydrodynamic ram and which includes a substructure having a plurality of individual cells each with a respective boundary, a composite skin disposed on the substructure, and perforations disposed through the composite skin which define a plurality of sections in the composite skin such that each section of the plurality of sections of the composite skin is disposed within the confines of each respective boundary of each of the plurality of individual cells of the substructure so that each section of the plurality of sections of the composite skin forms a blow off panel for relieving pressure created by hydrodynamic ram in a respective individual cell of the plurality of individual cells of the substructure.
