High sheet count rolls of spot-embossed, soft bathroom tissue suffer from embossing patterns becoming pressed out by the high winding tension necessary to confine the size of the roll to a diameter of about 5 inches. This size is necessary in order for such high sheet count rolls to fit within the bathroom tissue dispensers found in most households. However, by embossing the tissue between a resilient back-up roll and an engraved embossing roll having short male embossing element heights of only from about 0.005 to about 0.035 inch, the tissue sheet becomes simultaneously calendered, which lowers the sheet caliper (as measured under a compressive load). Because of the resulting lower caliper, the embossed sheet can be wound into the required roll size with less tension on the sheet, such that the embossing pattern for tissue sheets within the roll remains well defined.

Embossing with reduced element height

Embossing a web between unmatched male and female embossing elements, wherein the sidewall slope of the female element is different than the sidewall slope of the male element, provides an embossed web having markedly improved embossing pattern definition and, in the case of roll products, greater roll bulk at equivalent roll firmness. The unmatched male and female embossing elements are preferably made by laser engraving rubber embossing rolls.

Method for embossing webs

A spirometer comprises an upright, hollow frame structure having opposite end portions with an expansible and contractible bellows therein responsive to exhalation and inhalation. The bellows includes a hollow, resilient helical structure with a plurality of coils respectively having relatively broad upper and lower surfaces and relatively thin outer edges. Opposite end members close the helical structure, one of the closing end members being connected to one of the frame structure end portions for suspending the bellows inside the frame structure. A sheet of thin, fluid-impervious film extends the length of the helical structure when the helical structure is expanded and is heat shrunk onto the coils for forming convolutions engaging the upper and lower surfaces and outer edges. The sheath joins the opposite closed end members and defines an impervious outer wall structure for the bellows. A passage is connected to one of the closed end members and communicates with the bellows interior for transmitting inhalation and exhalation pressures thereto.

A temperature indicating probe comprises a liquid-in-glass thermometer encased in a clear plastic housing having a magnifying lens portion facing the thermometer tube to facilitate quick and acurate reading. The housing includes a series of tapered, cylindrical shaped portions separated by a step or shoulder, which are respectively insertable into variously sized standard medical appliance line openings or fittings, for sensing and indicating the temperature of the working fluids being carried through the line.
