A cutting insert-shim assembly that has a cutting insert with a bottom surface and a plurality of interior coolant passages wherein each interior coolant passage has a coolant inlet in the bottom surface of the cutting insert. The shim has a first side surface and a second side surface and contains a cavity, which communicates with the coolant conduit. The cavity defines a first opening in the first side surface and a second opening in the second side surface. When the shim is in a first condition, the first side surface contacts the bottom surface of the cutting insert and the first opening provides a first level of coolant communication to the interior coolant passages in the cutting insert. When the shim is in a second condition, the second side surface contacts the bottom surface of the cutting insert and the second opening provides a second level of coolant communication to the interior coolant passages in the cutting insert.

A metalcutting insert that is useful in chipforming and material removal from a workpiece The metalcutting insert includes a metalcutting insert body, which includes a cutting edge having at least one discrete cutting location. The metalcutting insert body further contains a distinct interior coolant passage communicating with the discrete cutting location. The distinct interior coolant passage has a coolant passage inlet defining a coolant passage inlet cross-sectional area, a coolant passage discharge defining a coolant passage discharge cross-sectional area, and an axial coolant passage length. The distinct interior coolant passage defines a coolant flow cross-sectional area along the axial coolant passage length thereof. The coolant passage inlet cross-sectional area is substantially the same as the coolant passage discharge cross-sectional area. The geometry of the coolant flow area changes along the axial coolant passage length.

An assembly of components for forming upon consolidation of the components a cutting insert for use in chipforming and material removal from a workpiece wherein the cutting insert receives coolant from a coolant source. The assembly comprises a cavity member that presents opposite first and second rake surfaces and a flank surface. The cavity member further presents a first cutting edge at the juncture of the first rake surface and the flank surface. The cavity member further has a first depression in the first rake surface that is generally adjacent to the first cutting edge. The cavity member has a first cavity channel in communication with the first depression.

An assembly for retaining a cutting insert in a pocket of a tool holder includes a locking pin, a spring disposed in the bore of the tool holder, a locking plate disposed in the bore between the spring and the locking pin, and a set screw for retaining the assembly. The locking plate is biased against a ledge of the bore to cause the locking pin to draw and retain the cutting insert in a direction such that the cutting insert is held in a secured position against the pocket of the tool holder. To release the cutting insert, a force is applied to the assembly to counteract the biasing force of the spring. The locking pin or the locking plate may include a flat surface that cooperates with a flat surface on the bore to act as a key to proper orientate the assembly in the bore.

A cutting insert includes an upper, lower and side surfaces and at least one leading cutting edge and a trailing wiper edge formed at an intersection of the upper surface with the side surface. A corner separates the leading cutting edge from the trailing wiper edge. The top surface includes a plurality of planar rake surfaces that extend inwardly and downwardly toward a seating surface of the insert. The top surface also includes a plurality of chip deflecting surfaces extending inwardly and upwardly toward the seating surface to form a transition zone between adjacent rake surfaces. The rake surfaces form a land angle with respect to a line perpendicular to the leading cutting edges. Additionally, a back wall surface extends upwardly from the rake surfaces to the seating surface to form a transition zone between the rake surfaces and the seating surface.

A cutting insert includes an upper, lower and side surfaces and at least one cutting edge formed at an intersection of the upper surface with the side surface. A rake face of the insert is formed with one or more undulated chip forming grooves extending along the cutting edge and comprising a succession of alternating depressed and raised portions. Each depressed and raised portion is radially aligned with a central axis of the insert along the entire width of the chip forming groove.

Cutting tool insert

A cutting insert for a metalworking operation includes a polygonal body of hard wear resistant material. The body has a top surface and a bottom surface, and therebetween a peripheral wall including adjacent first and second wall portions. The intersection of the first wall portion and the top surface forms a first cutting edge, and the intersection of the second wall portion and the top surface forms a second cutting edge. The first cutting edge and the second cutting edge meet to form a high point which is adapted to engage a workpiece first during the metalworking operation. In one embodiment, the top surface of the cutting insert has a topography that promotes chip control. The topography includes a plain adjacent to the cutting edges, and a plateau on the plain, which is, located inward from the cutting edges. The plateau is elevated relative to the plain and has a sloped side.
