A compression paddle with a plurality of markers is advanced towards a patient's breast which has been positioned on a support platform for an imaging procedure. An initial position of the compression paddle is detected relative to the support platform when a portion of the breast is contacted. An initial marker is identified which is associated with a feature of the breast when the compression paddle is in the initial position. A compression target marker is based at least in part on the initial position and the initial marker.

The cabinet may include an x-ray source, an x-ray detector, and a specimen drawer disposed between the x-ray source and the x-ray detector. An imaging system includes an x-ray tube head, a support arm, and a compression system coupled to the support arm. The compression system is independently rotatable relative to the x-ray tube head and includes a compression paddle, a support platform, and an x-ray receptor. The imaging system also includes a light assembly coupled to the support arm and disposed above the compression paddle. The light assembly is configured to direct one or more beams of light towards the support platform.

A bracket body releasably secures a compression element to the compression arm of a breast imaging system. A pair of parallel lateral arms extends from a rigid frame which extends from the bracket. A span connects the ends of the lateral arms opposite the bracket and a flexible membrane extends from the span towards the bracket body.

An imaging system with integrated magnification stand is described. In an embodiment, the imaging system may include an imaging detector configured to capture an image of human tissue. The imaging system may include a compression paddle situated apart from the imaging detector. A magnification stand of the imaging system may be configured to rotate between a first position and a second position, wherein the magnification stand is situated between the compression paddle and the imaging detector in the first position such that the human tissue can be compressed between the magnification stand and the compression paddle, and wherein the magnification stand is rotated to the second position in which the second position is generally perpendicular to the first position. In this manner, the magnification stand may be stored on the imaging system itself. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

A motion controlling system for providing a motion control signal to a motor driving a wheel of a medical equipment carriage is described. The system includes a handle having an end movably supported by the carriage so as to permit movement of the handle end relative to the carriage in a direction in which movement of the apparatus is desired, The system is also provided with an optical position encoding means, coupled between the handle end and the carriage, for providing a position signal indicating the position of the handle end relative to the carriage. A motion control means, responsive to the position signal from the optical position encoding means, provides a motion control signal to the motor. Several embodiments of the optical position encoding means, which include photodiode arrays and solar cells, are described.
