The presence of a minor amount of certain quaternary ammonium hydroxides in an engine lubricating oil has been found to be effective in reducing and controlling combustion chamber deposits and octane requirement increase in spark ignition internal combustion engines and in reducing oil consumption in diesel engines.

Vehicle driveability problems associated with deposits formed in multiport fuel injectors are alleviated by delivering fuel comprising a particular amine containing various C.sub.6 to C.sub.24 alkyl, aryl, cycloaliphatic, heterocyclic, substituted alkyl or substituted aryl groups and C.sub.1 to C.sub.24 alkyl, aryl, substituted alkyl or aryl, cycloaliphatic or heterocyclic groups. Particular amines include bis(2-hydroxy ethyl) cocoamine, bis(2-hydroxy ethyl tallow amine, bis(2-hydroxy ethyl) stearylamine, dimethylcocoamine, dimethyl hydrogenated tallow amine, dimethylhexadecylamine and mixtures thereof. Fuels containing the amine are stabilized against emulsions by inclusion in the fuel of certain demulsifiers. In the preferred embodiment, the amine is in combination with an oxide derivative thereof.

An additive package for reducing and/or preventing injector fouling in a multiport fuel injection means is described. The additive package preferably comprises a particularly described amine oxide, one or more particularly described demulsifiers, and a particularly described solvent system.

Fuel composition

Hydrocarbon fuel vapors from an internal combustion engine are adsorbed during engine nonoperation on an adsorbent and thereafter desorbed during engine operation by backflowing atmospheric air therethrough and then combusted in said engine. Desorption is initiated and maintained when the total air flow to the engine reaches a predetermined minimum amount.
