Systems, methods, and devices are provided relating to far field hologram viewing devices. A method of designing and manufacturing a far field hologram is provided. Holographic light patterns with minimal spurious pixel errors in the hologram response may be produced without requiring a tight tolerance on the relative positions of the hologram and an observer's eye. Far field viewing devices, and methods for making the same, that employ multiple unit holograms each having differing noise characteristics that superpose in a way to reduce the effects of spurious pixel errors while maintaining good overall noise performance.

Far field viewing devices for minimal spurious image noise

This invention pertains to the design of optimized far field viewing devices that simultaneously produce bright far field holographic light patterns and achieve good see-through performance to present a well focused scene. A far field transmission hologram recorded on a transparent substrate has regions having high diffraction efficiency juxtaposed with regions having low diffraction efficiency. The high diffraction efficiency regions contribute to production of bright far field holographic light patterns, whereas the low diffraction efficiency regions contribute to see-through performance.

Controlled diffraction efficiency far field viewing devices

A method and a viewing device for generation of selective visual effects. The method entails encoding a holographic optical transparency for generating pre-selected patterns of light when stimulated by appropriate sources of light and a structure to enable viewing through such a transparency. The viewing device contains a suitably encoded holographic optical transparency and a structure produced with semi-rigid material which allow viewing of the natural scene through the transparency with two eyes. The encoding of the transparencies causes all limited extent light sources in a scene to be replaced with pre-selected patterns of light while producing minimal distortion in the remainder of the scene.
