A method of molding a ceramic vessel includes compressing a water-soluble powder, suspending the compressed powder shape in a mold, injecting a ceramic molding mixture into the mold, and dissolving the compressed powder by flushing the vessel with water. A core for making an arc discharge vessel that has a discharge chamber and two capillaries includes a molded core of the water-soluble powder having a shape of the discharge chamber, and preferably two capillary-forming pins extending from the molded core. An apparatus for removing the molded core that includes a water reservoir that preferably flushes water through the vessel and dissolves molded core.

A ceramic discharge vessel in a green state prior to assembly includes a first discharge vessel part in a green state, a second discharge vessel part in a green state, wherein the first and second discharge vessel parts form a discharge vessel when joined together, and a first capillary attached to the first discharge vessel part and a second capillary attached to one of the first and second discharge vessel parts. To facilitate joining the first and second discharge vessel parts, a first removable handle is temporarily attached to the first discharge vessel part for maneuvering the first discharge vessel part, and a second removable handle is temporarily attached to the second discharge vessel part for maneuvering the second discharge vessel part.

Method for introducing a limited amount of mercury into a fluorescent lamp during manufacture thereof includes the steps of forming the lamp with an exhaust tubulation therein open at an end thereof, exhausting the interior of the lamp through the exhaust tubulation, placing a body of metal material not reactive with mercury in the exhaust tubulation open end, the body having a coating of metal which amalgams with mercury, over a selected surface area of the body, and having mercury on the coated area of the body, such that a limited amount of the mercury is retained by the metal coating, and sealing the open end of the exhaust tubulation, whereby the amount of mercury retained on the body and introduced into the lamp is limited by the surface area of the metal coating on the body.

Method for introducing a limited amount of mercury into a fluorescent lamp during manufacture thereof includes the steps of forming the lamp with an exhaust tubulation therein open at an end thereof and provided with a ball retention structure, exhausting the interior of the lamp through the tubulation open end, placing a rigid ball of inert material in the tubulation between the ball retention structure and the tubulation open end, the ball having a coating of a selected one of silver, gold, and indium, of a selected mass over a selected surface area of the ball, and mercury on the coated area, and sealing the open end of the tubulation, whereby the amount of mercury retained on the ball and thereby introduced into the lamp is limited by the selected mass of the coating on the ball.

An amalgam assembly for a fluorescent lamp includes an exhaust tubulation closed at a free end thereof, a glass ball disposed in the tubulation, and a mercury amalgam body disposed in the tubulation between the glass ball and the tubulation closed end. The tubulation is provided with a pinched portion comprising a plurality of inwardly extending dimples separated from each other and adapted to engage the glass ball to retain the glass ball on a central axis of the tubulation. The glass ball rests on the dimples concentrically and gaps between the dimples allow gas to pass therethrough between the glass ball and an inside surface of the tubulation.

Fluorescent lamp and amalgam assembly therefor

A quartz arc tube for a metal halide lamps and its method of making are described. The quartz arc tube has a cylindrical design which promotes a nearly symmetric longitudinal surface temperature profile during operation. The profile has a maximum temperature of about 900&deg; C. which allows for longer operating life at high average wall loadings.

An amalgam assembly for a fluorescent lamp includes a glass exhaust tubulation extending toward a base portion of the lamp, the tubulation being closed at an end adjacent the lamp base portion, and a metal cup disposed in the tubulation and retained by a pinched portion of the tubulation. The cup defines an annular outer wall having a free edge extending toward the tubulation closed end, a tubular central core portion extending toward the tubulation closed end, and an annular trough formed by the core portion and the outer wall. A mercury amalgam ball is disposed between the metal cup and the tubulation closed end, a diameter of the ball exceeding an inner diameter of the core portion, and a coating of a metal wetting agent is disposed on interior surfaces of the trough.

A method for making a ceramic body is provided wherein the ceramic components are joined in their green state. The method includes applying heat to the surfaces to be joined to cause a localized melting of the binder. The surfaces are then brought together and joined by alternately applying compression and stretching. The method is particularly advantageous for forming unitary ceramic arc tube bodies for high intensity discharge (HID) lighting applications.

An arc discharge lamp comprises an arc chamber having an amalgam tip attached to and communicating with it. The communication comprises a narrow tubular extension that penetrates the amalgam tip for a distance less than the depth of the tip. An amalgam that includes bismuth is contained within the amalgam tip. This construction allows operation of the lamp in any position and prevents the bismuth in the amalgam from penetrating the lamp and poisoning the phosphor.

A fluorescent lamp comprises a glass tubular body defining a discharge space, and first and second electrode assemblies mounted in the discharge space in opposition to each other, each of the electrode assemblies comprising a first electrode and a second electrode. Each of the first electrodes comprises a metal lead wire with an electron-emitting material disposed on a free end thereof, and each of the second electrodes comprises a cup-shaped tube coaxially surrounding one of the first electrodes and the electron-emitting material disposed on the first electrode. The second electrode tube and the electron emitting material therein form an annular gap therebetween.

A reflector lamp 10 has a vitreous outer envelope 12 formed of a concave reflector 14 and a light-transmitting 16 cover peripherally sealed thereto. The concave reflector and cover are symmetrically arrayed about a longitudinal axis 18 and a substantially cylindrical, hollow neck 20 having a given depth is affixed to the concave reflector opposite the cover. The neck 20 also is symmetrically arrayed about the longitudinal axis 18 and has a substantially closed bottom 21. At least two eyelets, 22, 24, respectively, are sealed in the bottom 21 and a light source capsule 26 is positioned in the concave reflector and aligned with the longitudinal axis 18. The light source capsule 26 has a first end 28 situated in the neck 20 and a second end 30 extending into the concave reflector. The light source capsule 26 comprises a quartz arc tube 32 containing an arc generating and sustaining medium and a surrounding aluminosilicate glass shroud 34. First and second conductive lead-ins 36, 38, respectively, are sealed into a first seal 40 formed at a first end 42 of the shroud 34. Each of the lead-ins 36, 38 has a first portion 44, 46, respectively, sealed in one of the eyelets 22, 24. The first conductive lead-in 36 has a second portion 48 extending interiorly of the shroud and connecting a first electrode 50 of the arc tube and contains a bend or offset 49 to take expansion differences during operation. The second lead-in 38 has a second portion 54 terminating within the first seal 40. An outer conductor 56 has a first end 58 sealed in a second end 60 of the shroud 34 and connects a second electrode 62 of the arc tube 32. A middle section 64 of the outer conductor 56, which is surrounded by an electrically insulating sleeve 57 for at least part of its length, extends exteriorly of the shroud 34 and has a second end 66 connected to the second said lead-in 38. A conventional screw base 68 completes the lamp.
