A process for making microporous membranes that incorporate selected gas selective species as surface sites in a controlled spacing and orientation manner and such membranes so formed being suitable for separating and purifying the selected gas from selected gas containing gas mixtures. An example is the use of oxygen selective transition element complexes (TECs) as surface sites for separating and purifying oxygen from oxygen-containing gas mixtures.

The invention relates to the use of adsorbent materials that have been selected on the basis of their relationship between that material's intrinsic rate and equilibrium properties.

VPSA process using adsorbent materials

The invention comprises a process for air separation using oxygen-selective sorbents with enhanced selectivity, loading capacities and oxygen uptake rates have a transition element complex in solid form supported on a high surface substrate. The transition element complex is substantially uniformly spaced, and includes a transition element ion accessible to an oxygen-containing gas stream during use in the separation of oxygen from an oxygen-containing gas mixture such as air.

Oxygen-selective sorbents

An adsorption process and system for the selective adsorption of a more readily adsorbable component, such as nitrogen, as from air or other feed gas mixture is carried out using a composite adsorbent bed containing different adsorbent materials positioned in separate zones in which the temperature conditions favor adsorption performance of the particular adsorbent material under applicable processing conditions in each zone. A method for the selection of the adsorbent materials is based on Adsorption Figure of Merit values.

Oxide solid solutions of praseodymium and cerium are useful as the oxygen carrier in a reversible cyclic oxidation-reduction process for separating oxygen from air. The adverse affects on redox rates of contaminants in the air, such as CO.sub.2 and/or H.sub.2 O are substantially eliminated by incorporating a surface dopant such as silver into the praseodymium-cerium oxide.
