A method of controlling bulk absorption of atomic hydrogen and facilitating degassing of hydrogen from a metal or metal alloy workpiece during heat treatments in furnaces with ambient and/or moisture-laden atmospheres, the method includes exposing the surface of the workpiece to an acidified inorganic salt solution or dispersion, with the inorganic salt of the solution containing a transition metal cation and a sulfate, phosphate or nitrate anion, before being subjected to said heat-treatment, said transition metal cation having an equal or positive standard reduction half-reaction potential relative to metal or metal alloy workpiece, the workpiece exposed to the acidified transition metal sulfate, phosphate or nitrate salt is subjected to a heat treatment. The acidified transition metal sulfate, phosphate or nitrate salt is used to substantially decrease the amount of atomic hydrogen entering the bulk of the workpiece during heat treatment and to facilitate removal of atomic and molecular hydrogen from the bulk of the metal or metal alloy workpiece.

Transition metal salt compositions that eliminate hydrogen absorption

A method of controlling bulk absorption of atomic hydrogen and facilitating degassing of hydrogen from aluminum alloy workpieces during heat treatment in furnaces with ambient and/or moisture-laden atmospheres. The method includes exposing the surface of the workpieces to an acidified inorganic salt solution or dispersion, with the inorganic salt of the solution containing a transition metal cation and a sulfate, phosphate or nitrate anion, before being subjected to the heat treatment. The workpieces are next subjected to the heat treatment, and the acidified transition metal sulfate, phosphate or nitrate salt is used to substantially decrease the amount of atomic hydrogen entering the respective bulks of the workpiece during heat treatment and to facilitate removal of atomic and molecular hydrogen from the bulks of the workpieces.

A parting composition useful for continuously casting aluminum and aluminum alloys and comprising glycerol trioleate and a vegetable oil. Mixtures of glycerol trioleate with castor oil have superior properties compared with parting compositions previously used for continuous ingot casting.

An aqueous metalworking composition comprising about 2-20 wt % of a water-soluble polyglycol, about 0.6-12 wt % of a neutralized or partially neutralized alkyl or alkenyl substituted succinic acid, and water. The composition is especially suitable for metalworking operations such as cutting, grinding, turning, milling, and drilling on aluminum and aluminum alloys.

Aqueous metal removal fluid

A metalworking lubricant composition comprising mineral oil and a trimethylolalkane ester. A metalworking lubricant emulsion is prepared by mixing about 1-5 wt % of the composition with about 95-99 wt % water. A preferred lubricant composition exhibits an unusual combination of lower wear than prior art compositions along with higher friction when tested on aluminum alloy samples. Accordingly, the lubricant composition is suitable for hot rolling or cold rolling aluminum and aluminum alloys.

A parting composition useful for continuously casting aluminum and aluminum alloys and comprising glycerol trioleate, castor oil and a copper corrosion inhibitor. The parting composition of the invention has superior properties compared with parting compositions previously used for continuous ingot casting. The copper corrosion inhibitor prevents deterioration around openings in oil injection rings made from copper.

A process is disclosed for the continuous casting of a lithium-containing alloy including casting the alloy through a mold and applying alpha-olefin oligomer to the mold. In one aspect, the process includes a lubricant containing alpha-olefin oligomer, preferably having a viscosity in the range of about 1-3 cs at 450.degree. F. In another aspect, the process includes a lubricant containing less than the varnish-film forming amount of fatty ester, fatty acid, or fatty alcohol.

The present invention involves a process for continuously casting a lithium-containing alloy by direct chill with a direct chill coolant and providing a moisture barrier liquid having a flash point higher than about 400.degree. F. to reduce water absorption in the coolant. The process in one aspect includes applying the moisture barrier liquid as a mold parting composition containing less than a varnish-film forming amount of fatty esters, fatty acids, or fatty alcohols. The process is particularly useful in the direct chill casting of aluminum-lithium alloy by direct chill with ethylene glycol coolant.

A method for removing residual hydraulic fluid from hydraulic systems employing a flushing fluid comprising a thickening agent dissolved in an organic solvent having a boiling point below about 125.degree. C. After draining fluid from a hydraulic system, flushing fluid is injected into the system and circulated to dissolve residual fluid. The flushing fluid, containing dissolved residual fluid, is then drained from the system. In a preferred embodiment, the flushing fluid comprises about one to three percent by weight ethyl cellulose dissolved in 1,1,1-trichloroethane together with about 0.1 to six percent by weight of a friction-reducing antiwear additive.
