The invention relates to an optical fiber comprising a core and a cladding, wherein the core is made of a glass composition having a near-zero electrostrictive coefficient M, to reduce the effect of stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS). The invention further relates to a compensation fiber segment for connection to a silica optical fiber, the compensation fiber segment being made of a glass composition having an electrostrictive coefficient that opposes that of the silica optical fiber so that an acoustic wave transmitted to compensation fiber segment from the silica optical fiber will generate an acoustic wave within the compensation fiber segment that is about 180 degrees out of phase with the that acoustic wave transmitted from the silica optical fiber, thereby minimizing the effect of stimulated Brillouin Scattering.

The invention relates to a Nd-doped (and/or Yb-doped and/or Er-doped) phosphate laser glass having a peak emission wavelength that is shorter than 1054 nm. Cerium oxide (CeO) is incorporated into a phosphate glass host system, preferably in replacement of lanthanum oxide, to shift the peak emission wavelength to a wavelength shorter than 1054 nm. The invention further relates to a laser system using mixed-glass arrangement and phase compensation, wherein one of the glasses of the mixed glass system is an Nd-doped (and/or Yb-doped and/or Er-doped) phosphate laser glass having a peak emission wavelength that is shorter than 1054 nm, and a method of generating a laser beam pulse using such a laser system.

The invention relates to glasses for use in solid laser applications, particularly short-pulsed, high peak power laser applications. In particular, the invention relates to a method for broadening the emission bandwidth of rare earth ions used as lasing ions in solid laser glass mediums, especially phosphate-based glass compositions, using Nd and Yb as co-dopants. The invention relates to a method for the manufacture of packaged components. The invention is based here on the problem of facilitating the application of covers with lateral dimensions that are smaller than the lateral dimensions of the functional substrate. For this purpose, a plate-like cover substrate is mounted on a carrier substrate. Then, on the uncovered side of the plate-like cover substrate, trenches are inserted, so that a composite part is obtained with the carrier substrate and individual covering parts that are separated from each other by the trenches, but interconnected by the carrier substrate. The covering parts of the composite part are connected with a functional substrate with a plurality of components. Then, the connection of the covering parts is dissolved with the carrier substrate, and the carrier substrate is removed, so that a composite is obtained with the functional substrate and a plurality of covering parts that cover functional areas.

The invention describes a glass and a glass-ceramic which at least includes the constituents SiO, AlOand YOand is preferably doped with rare earth ions. The weight ratio between the weight of YOand the total weight of SiO, AlOand YOis at least 0.2, preferably at least 0.4 or more. The rare earth ions can preferably be incorporated in crystal phases which are precipitated out of glass with a high yttrium content.

A resonant enhanced photosensitive material includes a trap center that is adapted to interact with light and enhances the photosensitivity of the material based on a resonant interaction process with photons. The invention provides enhanced photosensitivity materials and, especially a method for enhancing photosensitivity in glasses, glass ceramics and ceramics.

The opto-ceramics and optical elements of the present invention are transmissive to visible light and/or to infrared radiation. They consist of a crystal combination in which individual crystallites have a cubic structure of the type YOand are made from InOor a mixture of oxides of the type XOin which X=Y, Lu, Sc, Yb, In, Gd, or La. Also mixtures of XOwith oxides having different stoichiometries, such as zirconium and hafnium oxide, are possible, as long as the cubic structure of the opto-ceramic is maintained. The optical elements prepared from the opto-ceramics are particularly suitable for mapping optics, such as objectives having reduced chromatic aberrations, in particular with approximately apochromatic mapping behavior. The optical elements of the present invention may be used in lens systems in combination with lenses of glass, but also with other ceramic lenses.

The optical elements are made from an opto-ceramic material that is characterized by high density, transparency for visible light and IR, high refractive index, high Abbe number and outstanding relative partial dispersion. Mixed oxides are sintered to obtain the opto-ceramic material. The mixed oxides contain zirconium oxide and hafnium oxide mixed with one or more oxides of yttrium, scandium, lanthanide elements, and optionally mixed with one or more of SiO, NaO, and TiO. Optical elements and imaging optics comprising them

A method for the low temperature joining of similar and/or different phosphate glass by mating at low temperature glass components by an aqueous solution containing phosphorus. In preferred embodiments, the phosphate glasses are polished, cleaned, and brought together with the phosphate-containing solution between the polished surfaces. Vacuum may be applied to assist in making the joint. The composite is optionally heat treated to increase strength, chemical durability, and optical performance. The bond thereby formed has low birefringence, is strong, and is virtually photonically invisible. The joints now make possible, for example, substrates for virtually no loss signal splitters and other high-end optical components at low cost. Large hybrid performs substrates composed of multiple glass components may be prepared and segmented, providing an inexpensive novel substrate for the photonics industry. Active lasing phosphate glasses may be joined by the present invention method to passive non-lasing glasses for use in laser and related applications.
