The subject matter described herein includes processing file system metadata in host write requests to determine information about future host write operations. The information regarding future host write operations can be used by a device controller to prepare the non-volatile memory for the future host write operations. For example, the device controller may prepare the non-volatile storage device for future sequential host write access patterns or random host write access patterns depending on the content of the file system metadata. The file system metadata may also be usable to determine when it is optimal to perform memory management operations.

Systems and methods for generating hint information associated with a host command are disclosed. In one implementation, a processor of a host system determines whether the host system has initiated a procedure that will send a command to a non-volatile memory system. The processor analyzes at least one of metadata or payload data associated with the command to determine whether the processor is able to generate hint information associated with the at least one of metadata or payload data. The processor generates hint information based on the analysis of the at least one of metadata or payload data, sends the hint information to the non-volatile memory system, and sends the command to the non-volatile memory system.

Methods and systems for managing data storage in a non-volatile memory system are disclosed. The method may include receiving data, determining a data classification for the received data from a predetermined plurality of data classifications, writing the received data to an open block having only data of a same data classification as the determined data classification and, upon completely programming the open block, associating an epoch indicator where the epoch indicator defines a time period within which the block was created. When a block reclaim trigger is detected, only data within a same data classification and epoch may be reclaimed. An incrementing epoch indicator identifies a predetermined time granularity and is assigned to data such that earlier data and newer data are distinguishable. A system to implement the method may include a non-volatile memory and a controller configured to track and apply epoch and data-type classification information for data.

Method and system for managing data in non-volatile memory

A system and method for I/O optimization in a multi-queued environment are provided. In one embodiment, a host is provided that sorts commands into a plurality of queues, wherein a command is sorted based on its data characteristic. The host receives a read request from a storage module for commands in the plurality of queues and provides the storage module with the requested commands. In another embodiment, a storage module is provided that processes commands from a host based on the data characteristic of the queue that stored the command on the host. In another embodiment, a storage module sorts command completions into a plurality of queues, wherein a command completion is sorted based on its resulting status code.

A method for avoiding refreshing a database of metadata associated with digital media content is disclosed. In one embodiment, a digital media player storing a database of metadata associated with digital media content determines whether a removable memory device was connected with the digital media player while the digital media player was powered down. The digital media player refreshes the database only if it is determined that the removable memory device was connected with the digital media player while the digital media player was powered down. In another embodiment, the digital media player determines whether the digital media content stored on the removable memory device changed since the database was last updated. The digital media player refreshes the database if it is determined that the digital media content stored on the removable memory device changed since the database was last updated.

Generally, in a host to which a storage device is operatively coupled, wherein the storage device includes a cache for storing one or more discardable files, a file is identified to be uploaded to an external location. A determination is made whether sufficient free space exists in the cache to pre-stage the file for upload to the external location and the file is stored in the cache upon determining that sufficient free space exists in the cache to pre-stage the file for upload to the external location, wherein pre-stating prepares a file for opportunistically uploading such file in accordance with an uploading policy.
