Straight-handle pulse tool

The invention is an impulse wrench that employs a fluid coupling between its anvil and hammer members. The tool includes a pulse cylinder that forms the tool's hammer and has a shaped inner surface that defines a side wall of a fluid-filled chamber. An end portion of the anvil is received within the chamber and includes two retractable vanes that sweep the pulse cylinder's inner surface when the pulse cylinder is rotating about the anvil. To achieve only a single impact per revolution of the pulse cylinder, fluid bypass channels are employed to intermittently allow fluid to pass around the vanes. In addition, the tool includes a unique torque-sensing shut-off mechanism that is engaged to the tool's motor and makes use of inertia force to actuate a power shut-off device.

A reversible powered impact wrench is provided wherein improvements are incorporated in the detenting of the reverse direction valve, venting of excessive air pressure within the impact wrench motor housing which may use light weight material due to improved clutch and camming means and wherein an improved one piece anvil-timing shaft is designed to be supported by the impact wrench hammer and rotor.

A pneumatic hydraulic hand-held riveting tool having a pneumatic operative means arranged to generate pressure upon a hydraulic fluid whereby a rivet set plunger is brought into contact with a rivet to be set without deformation of the rivet, and being further arranged to generate hydraulic pressure on the rivet set plunger effective to set the rivet, as well as to provide rapid hydraulic pressure relief.

A rotary orbital sander including a motor housing enclosing a motor, a drive shaft rotatable by the motor, which drive shaft has an off-set projecting portion, a pinion gear housing affixed to the motor housing, a carrier supported upon the shaft off-set projecting portion by two parallel arranged ball bearings, a sanding pad assemblage removably attached to the carrier, intermeshing spur gears arranged on the pinion gear housing and the carrier, a handle arranged for conduction of pressurized pneumatic medium to the motor, a throttle valve for regulation of pneumatic medium flow to the motor, a valve in the handle for cut-off of pneumatic medium to the throttle value, and a counter-balance weight affixed to the shaft off-set projecting portion, said weight being positioned so that its center of gravity of rotation is in the same plane as the center of gravity of rotation of--the carrier, the carrier supporting bearings and a sanding pad assembly attached to the carrier--said pinion gear housing having a circular cavity surrounding the carrier which is engageable by the carrier as it revolves, to provide rotational support for the carrier.

A method for tightening a fastener to yield point wherein areas under a torque-angle curve--each of said areas including a constant abscissa--are successively measured. A decrease of area in a subsequently measured area, indicates that yield point of the fastener has occured. Upon attainment of yield point, the final torque and angular rotation parameters are checked to determine if pre-set values have been realized. The method includes a preliminary torque-angle curve measurement to determine if certain conditions are satisfied; failure to satisfy such conditions, aborts the tightening operation.

A method for monitoring torque and angle developed upon a fastener during fastener run-up and setting, which method utilizes successive area measurements under a torque-angle curve, said areas being compared at predetermined torque levels to provide an indication of whether or not the entire assembly operation satisfies established criteria. Auxiliary means may include tool stopping by automatic shut-off means, or tool stall, and read-out means in the form of a printed record, an alarm signal, e.g., flashing lights or sounding means, as well as marking of a fastener to indicate compliance with predetermined fastener assembly criteria.

A sanding shoe attachable to a reciprocable carrier in a hand-held portable sanding machine, the shoe having bulbous ends over which ends of sandpaper applied to a cushioned bottom of the shoe are extended and clamped between a pair of jaws in over-center lever operable clamping mechanisms, the latter having projections for centralizing the lever in its support and abutments cooperable with the lever to restrain it in its actuated condition against vibratory release.
