A method of substantially preventing road speed excursions while traversing a road grade includes: determining, by a controller, a predicted over speed for a vehicle during an upcoming downhill grade based on a difference between a predicted engine braking power of the vehicle and an amount of braking power that substantially prevents a speed of the vehicle from exceeding a speed threshold; and responsive to the determination, controlling, by the controller, one or more components of the vehicle to substantially prevent the vehicle from exceeding the speed threshold.

Speed limiting of vehicles equipped with engine brakes

A system, method, and apparatus includes management of coasting during operation of a vehicle having an engine that is selectively engageable to a driveline, a cruise control mode of operation, and a road speed governor mode of operation. A road speed governor mode of operation of the vehicle is active in response to a road speed governor operation condition being present wherein the driveline is engaged with the engine. When a coasting management condition is present, operation of the vehicle in the road speed governor mode is disabled, the driveline is disengaged from the engine, and the vehicle is operated in a coasting mode of operation. The coasting mode of operation can be canceled when a coasting mode of operation cancellation condition is present to operate the vehicle in a road speed governor mode of operation with the driveline re-engaged with the engine.

Coasting management control of a vehicle with a road speed governor

Engine control modules as well as methods and systems implementable in a vehicle are disclosed, in which the engine control module includes a processing unit operative to control a target vehicle speed. The processing unit receives current status information and lookahead information regarding a route to be taken by the vehicle, performs a lookahead power requirement calculation based on the current status information and the lookahead information to determine an event, calculates a plurality of offsets with respect to an isochronous speed of the vehicle based on the determined event, and sets a target vehicle speed curve by applying the plurality of offsets to the isochroous speed.

Predictive road speed governor

A method of substantially preventing road speed excursions while traversing a road grade event includes receiving, by a controller, vehicle operations data regarding operation of a vehicle and road grade data regarding an upcoming road grade of a path ahead of the vehicle. The method additionally includes determining, by the controller, an amount of braking power that substantially prevents the vehicle from exceeding a speed threshold regarding operation of the vehicle based on the road grade and vehicle operations data, and determining an amount of engine braking power based on a current transmission setting. The method further includes controlling, by the controller, a transmission setting in response to a determination that the amount of engine braking power is less than the amount of braking power.
