A method includes attempting, by a computing device capable of connecting to a long term evolution (LTE) cellular network, to perform a first non-access stratum (NAS) procedure via a serving eNodeB associated with a serving cell included in the LTE cellular network. The first NAS procedure includes a radio access network (RAN) layer portion and a NAS layer portion. The method further includes determining that the first NAS procedure was unsuccessful due to a first NAS procedure failure. In response to the first NAS procedure being unsuccessful due to the first NAS procedure failure, a first alternate cell included in the LTE cellular network is selected, and there is an attempt to perform a second NAS procedure via a first eNodeB associated with the first alternate cell. The selection of the first alternate cell is initiated by the computing device.

When connected to an alternate network, a user device may search for a preferred network when the user device is actively transmitting traffic via the alternate network. As such, the user device may search for, and potentially locate, the preferred network faster than when the user device waits to search for the preferred network after becoming idle. While active, the user device may search for the preferred network for a relatively short duration, in order to limit the amount of time that data flow transmission is interrupted when searching for the preferred network. The user device may search for the preferred network based on a list of search parameters. The list of search parameters may be prioritized differently based on whether the user device is active or idle, and may be based on a quantity of times that the user device has searched for the preferred network.

Scanning for a preferred network during an active connection to another network

A device may identify a first set of radio frequency (RF) spectrum bands supported by a visited public mobile network (VPMN) for a first radio access technology (RAT), and may identify a second set of RF spectrum bands supported by a user device for the first RAT. The device may compare the first set of RF spectrum bands and the second set of RF spectrum bands, and may determine whether the user device and the VPMN support a same RF spectrum band for the first RAT. The user device may be registered to use the first RAT when the user device and the VPMN support the same RF spectrum band for the first RAT, or the user device may be registered to use the second RAT when the user device and the VPMN do not support the same RF spectrum band for the first RAT.

Selecting a radio access technology based on radio frequency spectrum bands supported by a user device and by a roaming network

Examples of power conservation management for user equipment based on the operating state of the user equipment are provided. A user equipment may implement a power managing application that monitors the activity of the user equipment, such as the number of applications open on the user equipment, the data usage requirements for each open application, data delay tolerances for each application and/or a level of user interaction with the device at a given moment. Based on the level of activity and the data requirements, the managing application on the user equipment is able to make a discontinuous reception profile setting recommendation selected from more than two discontinuous reception profiles to the mobile communications network entity. In response to the discontinuous reception profile setting recommendation, the network entity may modify the connection status with the user equipment.
