An apparatus and method for improving the signal reception of a digital wireless receiver comprises a processing circuit for processing the preamble information of incoming signals, wherein a first predetermined portion of the preamble information is applied to a first antenna and a second predetermined portion of the preamble information is applied to a second antenna to produce a plurality of processed signals, such that the plurality of processed signals is compared to a predefined preamble sequence to obtain a mean-square error (MSE) for the respective antenna. Then, one of the first and second antennas with a lower MSE is selected to receive and process the incoming signals.

Bit level, rather than symbol level, diversity combining is employed within a wireless communications receiver. Channel estimates and bit metrics are separately computed for signals received by different antenna elements. Bit metrics are calculated by determining a least squares cumulative difference between all bits within the received symbol and corresponding bits within constellation symbols as modified by the channel estimate. The separately-determined bit metrics are then combined for decoding. Performance improvements over both single antenna systems and multiple antenna systems with symbol level diversity combining are achieved.

A method for a beam forming configuration is provided. A representation of a 3D polygon is formed from a plurality of blocks. The blocks are arranged according to a frequency, a time, and a space within the 3D polygon. Based on the frequency, the time, and the space of an electronic signal, one of the blocks is selected. An equation that is based on the block or to the block and the blocks relationship to one or more of the other blocks is used to form an output.

Single beamforming structure for multiple modulation schemes

A free-running sample rate converter and a large spanning, non-linear pre-equalizer are employed before a timing recovery loop within a wireless receiver chain, while forward and feedback equalization after the timing recovery loop (at and around the input of a sync detector) is also retained. A channel identifier produces a channel estimate from the PN511 training sequence within the received wireless signals, with the pre-equalizer employing the resulting channel estimate to equalize the received signals being passed to the timing recovery loop, improving the signal quality for carrier and timing recovery and decoding to increase the probability of successful decoding while enabling the use of fast tracking forward and feedback equalizers for decoding.

Pre-equalizer structure based on PN511 sequence for terrestrial DTV reception

An adaptive antenna system includes N antennae, N forward equalizers operatively coupled to a respective one of the N antennae, and N processors performing a constant modulus algorithm (CMA) to thereby generate N respective control signals which adapt coefficients associated with each respective one of the forward equalizer. Preferably, the adaptive antenna system also includes a sampling device receiving a signal based on the collected output of the N forward equalizers, and a feedback equalizer receiving an output of the sampling device and generating a feedback signal biasing the signal received by the sampling device. If desired, the N control signals are applied to the N respective forward equalizers during a first operating mode, and a selected one of the N control signals is applied to the N forward equalizers during second mode of operation. A method of operating a beamforming antenna system is also described.

Blind dual error antenna diversity (DEAD) algorithm for beamforming antenna systems

The invention relates to a method and system for modulating an MPEG-4 FGS compressed video stream for variable-bandwidth transmission. A source of a video stream is provided, and a display having means for generating a control input signal for controlling one or more of video compression, error correction code generation, or symbol constellation mapping. The source video stream is compressed using MPEG-4 FGS compression to generate a compressed output video stream. The video compression is optionally performed based upon the control input signal from the display. Error correction code for the compressed video stream may be added, and its generation and addition may be optionally controlled based upon the control input signal from the display. The resulting video symbols may then be mapped to constellations, with this mapping also optionally controlled based upon the control input signal. The resulting compressed output video stream is then transmitted to the display.

Combined MPEG-4 FGS and modulation algorithm for wireless video transmission

A method and system for generating a compressed domain, digital signal suitable for transmission, the method including: providing a first digital data stream signal including a first plurality of data bits and a second digital data stream signal including a second plurality of data bits; determining a threshold value for the first digital data stream signal; identifying select ones of the first plurality of bits dependent upon the threshold value; and, substituting data bits from the second plurality for the select bits of the first plurality to generate a composite digital data stream signal; wherein the composite digital data stream signal is adapted to be received and decoded by receivers adapted to receive the first digital data stream signal and receivers adapted to receive the composite digital data stream signal.

Backward compatible multiple data stream transmission method and system for compressed domain signals

A synchronization system within a dual antenna receiver employs two timing recovery loops each coupled to a different antenna input. Segment sync lock (detection of a segment sync in the data stream) by one timing recovery loop prompts selection of the timing error from the corresponding timing recovery loop for timing recovery within both loops. Both timing recovery loops are then synchronized utilizing the selected timing error. If sync lock for the selected loop is lost, the other loop is selected to provide timing error to both loops.

Timing recovery switching for an adaptive digital broadband beamforming (antenna diversity) for ATSC terrestrial DTV based on segment sync detection

A synchronization system within a dual antenna receiver employs two timing recovery loops each coupled to a different antenna input. The timing error computed within each timing recovery loop is differentiated by a high pass filter and compared to a predefined threshold indicating convergence. Both sampling rates are then synchronized utilizing the timing error from whichever loop converges first. If synchronization lock for the selected loop is lost, the other loop is selected to provide timing error to both loops.

Timing recovery switching for an adaptive digital broadband beamforming (antenna diversity) for ATSC terrestrial DTV based on a differentiator

There is disclosed an apparatus and method for improving signal reception in a signal receiver. The apparatus comprises a beamforming circuit and a decision feedback equalizer circuit. The beamforming circuit comprises two circuit branches with each circuit branch having a radio frequency (RF) tuner capable of being coupled to an antenna, an intermediate frequency (IF) mixer, a .pi./2 phase shift circuit, and two feedforward equalizer circuits and an adder circuit. In the decision feedback equalizer circuit a decision device that is coupled to the output of said adder circuit modifies equalizer coefficients in said feedforward equalizer circuits to reduce an interfering signal by electronically forming a null in the direction of the interfering signal.
