A metal cutting tool assembly comprising a tool block; a substantially planar adaptor to be screw-clamped to the tool block; first and second insert clamping jaws formed integrally with the adaptor and defining between them an insert receiving slot for receiving a cutting insert; a relatively narrow neck portion formed integrally with the adaptor and serving to couple the first jaw with the remainder of the adaptor and screw coupling means for clamping the adaptor to the tool block; the screw coupling means including aligned screw receiving bores formed respectively in the adaptor and the block and so directed that screw insertion of a clamping screw into the aligned bores effectively clamps the adaptor against the tool block and, at the same time, exerts a resultant force on a first jaw so as to pivot it about the neck portion into effectively clamping the insert against the second jaw.

An elongated tool block for use in metal grooving, parting, turning or boring operations and being of the kind consisting of two component blocks which, when screw coupled together, also clamp a holder blade thereto, one of the blocks being formed with an elongated edge surface serving to delimit an outer longitudinal boundary of a holder blade retaining groove, and having an end portion and an intermediate portion; a relatively resilient coupling portion of this one block serving to couple the end and intermediate portions together; there being furthermore provided first screw coupling means for screw coupling the component blocks together at the intermediate portion and second screw coupling means for screw coupling the component blocks together at the end portion.

A metal cutting insert having an arcuately shaped cutting edge; a rake surface extending inwardly from the cutting edge and chip forming means located inwardly of said rake face; and comprising a pair of curved chip deflector surfaces sloping uniformly and smoothly away from said rake surface towards respective deflector surface peaks; the deflector surfaces being concavely curved in an axial direction and convexly curved in a lateral direction; a valley portion extending longitudinally and centrally between said deflector surfaces; the deflector surfaces sloping uniformly away from said side relief flanks towards said valley portion in a direction towards the bottom face so as to merge smoothly with said valley portion via smoothly curved corners; the lateral extent of each deflector surface diminishing uniformly from a maximum adjacent said rake surface to a minimum adjacent the respective surface peak.

A cutting tool assembly wherein a replaceable cutting insert is clampingly held between a pair of clamping jaws of an insert holder which are respectively provided with pairs of clamping surfaces one pair of clamping surfaces being of uniformly curved cross-sectional shape, while the other pair of clamping surfaces being of non-uniformly curved cross-sectional shape; the arrangement being such that when the insert is clamped between the jaws the respective clamping surfaces contact each other along discrete, axially directed locations which are symmetrically disposed with respect to and axially spaced from a median plane of the insert.

A cutting insert for use in internal and external chamfering of pipe ends. The cutting insert is capable of ready and insertion and replacement in a metal cutting tool and can be held firmly in the tool holder in a predetermined position.

A polygonally shaped metal cutting insert having top, bottom, front, rear and side faces with corresponding front and side cutting edges, chip forming means being located on the top face within an area defined by the cutting edges and comprising a front chip deflector surface spaced from the cutting edges, projecting out of the top surface and directed along the length of one of the side cutting edges and first and second side chip deflector surfaces spaced from the cutting edges, projecting out of the top surface and respectively directed along the lengths of the side cutting edges.

A metal cutting tool for turning, cutting off, grooving, chamfering and end facing operations. A cutting insert is clamped in a slot in a tool holder by a resiliently pivoting jaw. The tool and holder have complementary longitudinal keying ribs and grooves and a mating transverse projection and recess for resisting forces in both direction.

A tool holder includes an insert receiving pocket formed by a pair of clamping jaws. The upper jaw is resiliently pivoted about a bridge portion by a clamping device. The clamping device includes a screw which wedges a clamping element having a tapered tooth into a slot which urges the upper jaw towards the lower jaw to clamp the insert.

Tool systems using replaceable cutting inserts and the insert for use in the systems wherein the tool holders have wedge shaped recesses for holding the inserts which are also wedge shaped and have shoulder means thereon that maintains the distance the cutting edge of the insert extends from the holder predetermined during operation of the system.

A rotary slot cutting tool arrangement is described in which a disc-shaped body has a plurality of peripherally disposed recesses. Each recess is adapted to have a seat self-locked therein. The seat in turn is capable of having a cutting insert inserted into it as well as removed therefrom, without the seat having to change its position with respect to the body itself.
