The crankcase, fixed and orbiting scrolls and Oldham coupling are assembled to make a pump cartridge assembly as a subassembly of a scroll compressor. The pump cartridge assembly is tested to determine whether or not it operates satisfactorily. Upon successful testing, the pump cartridge assembly is installed in the shell of a hermetic compressor.

In a reciprocating compressor, the separator plate separating the suction and discharge plenums acts as a spring relative to the valve plate assembly. Under liquid slugging conditions the valve plate moves against the biasing force of the separator plate to establish a relief passage between the piston cylinder and the suction plenum.

A rotary cylinder is tested by loading in two fixed and one movable locations until a location of the movable point is found at which no, or a predetermined amount of, distortion takes place in the vane slot. The cylinder is then welded into a shell at the three points without producing distortion of the vane slot or with a predetermined distortion.
