In an imaging apparatus, such as used for recording full-color images from a moving sheet, different rows of photosensors are each filtered to record one primary color. Certain specific spacings of adjacent rows of photosensors are particularly useful in operating the apparatus at different commonly-used output speeds.

Design parameters for a multi-row linear photosensor array

In a system for processing full-color image data, such as within a digital color printer or copier, a four-channel architecture is used. Three of the channels handle image data relating to primary color planes, such as CMY. In the other channel, values relating to the K value which goes with the CMY values for each pixel alternate with a B value, suitable for pure monochrome rendering of the pixel in the image. When it is desired to print or display the image in monochrome, the B values are isolated from the K values.

A method of eliminating strobing in successive scan lines of an image includes determining a nominal scan line time and an associated scan line integration time for the image sensor. A nominal illumination light source output period is determined for the illumination source. In order to ensure that the scan line integration time is equivalent to an integer number of illumination source light output periods, at least one of the nominal scan line integration time and the nominal illumination source light output period is adjusted. A clock signal, derived from the pixel clock, drives both the frequency circuitry of the lamp drive circuit and the integration time of the image sensor. The present method provides a reliable means for eliminating lamp strobing independent of the relative phasing of the lamp oscillation phase with respect to the start of each scan line integration.

Method and apparatus for eliminating lamp strobing in a digital input scanner

An input scanner for scanning three-dimensional objects, such as books, on a platen. The input scanner includes a light source for illuminating a three-dimensional object, an elongated sensor array for producing a digital representation of the image on the three-dimensional object, a lens array, a moving mirror, and a mirror positioning system, which beneficially includes a mirror motor. The mirror positioning system positions the mirror such that the input scanner's object plane tracks the contour of the three-dimensional object on the platen. Object plane adjustments are performed in response to contour information from a mechanical track guide, from a profile memory, or from a height sensor. Additionally, the input scanner might use a movable lens array, which is beneficially a gradient-index lens array.

A color transformation matrix K transforms device dependent color imaging signals RGB into device independent color imaging signals XYZ. The transformation matrix K includes a set of coefficients k . An optimization value is calculated for the transformation matrix as a function of the coefficients within the transformation matrix having a value less than zero. The values of the coefficients within the transformation matrix are then adjusted; and a minimal optimization value is determined for the transformation matrix, which preferably has coefficients with values that are greater than zero. The optimization procedure seeks to minimize the optimization value by adjusting the values of the coefficients within the transformation matrix, such that the coefficients within the matrix are all positive values. This added constraint on the transformation matrix in the minimization technique will lead to larger residual color errors. However, in some cases, solutions may be found that minimize the errors without significantly affecting the XYZ values.

Color scanners that separate multi-wavelength light into color components having substantially equal optical path lengths. An colorscanner includes a first prism that receives multi-wavelength light, internally reflects a first component and passes second and third components into a first gap. A first reflector reflects the second and third components back into the first prism. The component parts then pass into a second prism that internally reflects the first and second component parts but passes the third component into a second gap. A second reflector reflects the third component part back into the second prism. A third prism then receives the color components, internally reflects the third component part, and passes the first and second component parts into a third gap. A third reflector reflects the first and second component parts back into the third prism. A fourth prism then receives the color components, internally reflects the second and third components, and passes the first component into a fourth gap. A fourth reflector then reflects the first component part back into the fourth prism. The color components then exit from the fourth prism.

A system and method electronically determines an edge of a copy substrate to be printed on. A copy substrate is inserted between a linear light source array and a linear sensor array and a light segment of the linear light source array is illuminated. An edge location of a shadow created by the copy substrate intersecting a light path between the illuminated light segment and the linear sensor array is measured, and a location of the edge of the copy substrate is calculated based on the measured shadow location. A second light segment of the linear light source on an opposite side of an expected copy substrate edge position of the light segment can also be illuminated, and a second edge location of a shadow created by the copy substrate intersecting a light path between the illuminated second light segment and the linear sensor array can be measured wherein this second measurement can be used with the first to calculate a location of the edge of the copy substrate. Alternatively, the calculated location can be used to determine a light segment of the linear light source which corresponds to the calculated location. This determined light source is illuminated and the shadow measured. The new measurement is used to calculate the edge of the copy substrate.

A color space transformation device includes a sensor bar. The sensor bar includes a plurality of sensor chips. Each sensor chip scans a unique section of an original image to produce first data in a first color space. A memory means stores groups of coefficients. Each group of coefficients corresponds to one of the sensor chips. A processor independently transforms each of the sections of the first data to a respective section of a second data. The transformation is performed as a function of one of the groups of coefficients corresponding to the sensor chip which produced the first data.

Copy substrate edge electronic registration system for a reprographic

A fluorescent light source includes a fluorescent lamp, lamp bases attached to opposite ends of the fluorescent lamp, and an electrically insulating substrate connected to the fluorescent lamp. A heating element is positioned on the fluorescent lamp, and a first and second pair of power traces are formed on the electrically insulating substrate. The first pair of power traces are connected to the heating element to provide power thereto. The second pair of power traces are connected to a pair of electrical conductors that provide power to the fluorescent lamp. This fluorescent lamp can be used in a replaceable fluorescent light source unit for a document scanner. The replaceable fluorescent light source unit includes a housing, lamp base receiving members attached to the housing, and registration notches to properly align the fluorescent lamp. Lastly, the fluorescent lamp source includes light blocking material to provide a uniform illumination profile along the length of the lamp.

A system for calibrating a digital scanner utilizes a calibration strip having reference information printed thereon and a machine readable encoded tag having characteristic values corresponding to the calibration strip reference information encoded thereon. A scanning system scans the calibration strip and the machine readable encoded tag to generate image data corresponding to scanned-in reference information and data corresponding to scanned-in characteristic values of the reference information. The correction values are then derived from the generated image data and the decoded characteristic values that accurately describe the desired image data.

A fluorescent light source includes a fluorescent lamp, lamp bases attached to opposite ends of the fluorescent lamp, and an electrically insulating substrate connected to the fluorescent lamp. A heating element is positioned on the fluorescent lamp, and a first and second pair of power traces are formed on the electrically insulating substrate. The first pair of power traces are connected to the heating element to provide power thereto. The second pair of power traces are connected to a pair of electrical conductors that provide power to the fluorescent lamp. In a variation of the first embodiment, a two-stage MTF filter is used. In a second embodiment, a tunable liquid crystal scattering MTF filter is combined with a full width sensor array.
