A device for perforating and fracturing a formation in a single trip includes shaped charges and a volume of a gas generator. When activated by detonation of the shaped charges, the gas generator forms a high-pressure gas, which includes steam, that expands to stress and fracture the formation. Suitable gas generating materials include hydrates and hydroxides. Other materials that can be employed with the gas generator include oxidizers and material such as metals that increase the available heat for the activation of the gas generator.

Apparatus and method for perforating and fracturing a subterranean formation

A method for perforating a subterranean formation includes positioning a shaped charge and a reactant composite material in a carrier; positioning the carrier in the wellbore; detonating the shaped charge; and disintegrating the reactant composite material using a shock generated by the detonated shaped charge. The method may also include initiating a first deflagration by using carbon and heat resulting from the detonation of the shaped charge and an oxygen component of the disintegrated reactant composite material. A system for performing the method may include a carrier, a shaped charge positioned in the carrier; and a reactant composite material positioned in the carrier. The reactant composite material may be configured to disintegrate upon detonation of the shaped charge.

System and method for enhanced wellbore perforations

An apparatus for stimulating a subterranean formation includes a first tube, a second tube, a combustion body and an ignition propagator. The second tube is positioned within the first tube interior and the second tube interior is sealed from the first tube interior to substantially prevent fluid communication between the first tube interior and the second tube interior. The combustion body is formed from a solid propellant and is positioned within the first tube interior external to the second tube interior. The ignition propagator is positioned within the second tube interior and is substantially free from fluid contact with fluid residing in the surrounding environment external to the first tube wall.

Stimulation tool having a sealed ignition system

A shaped charge is formed having a pressed polymer pellet positioned between the explosive charge and the metal liner. The shock wave resulting from detonation of the explosive passes through the polymer to the liner. The collapse of the liner results in the formations of a jet&#x2014;piercing the casing. The high-pressure gaseous by-products of the explosive force (inject) the polymer in the perforation 'tunnel'. This shockwave will also start the decomposition of the polymer. The polymer will continue to decompose during its injection into the tunnel. As it is being injected into the perforation tunnel, the residue heat generated by the explosive combined with the shear and induced plastic flow, the polymer will ignite and burn. The burn time will be an order of magnitude greater than the explosive; the pressure generated by the polymer will be an order of magnitude less than the explosive.

Shaped charge

A method of creating a seismic wave in a subterranean environment wherein solid propellant material is positioned in a subterranean well and ignited thereby generating a seismic wave. The seismic wave is recorded at distance from where the propellant material is ignited by means of geophones or similar recording devices. The propellant material is geometrically configured with the assistance of computer modeling. The pressure generated by the ignition is recorded in the well and used to validate the computer model for configuring subsequent propellant material employed as a seismic source.

Apparatus and method for generating seismic energy in subterranean formations

A method for stimulating a subterranean formation which is penetrated by a well bore having casing positioned therein so as to establish fluid communication between the formation and the well bore. Propellant is secured to the outer surface of a carrier having a plurality of apertures formed therein. Detonating cord is positioned within said carrier and when ignited causes the propellant to ignite initially at each aperture. In this manner, the propellant is caused to burn in controlled, uniform manner. Upon burning, the propellant generates gases which clean perforations previously formed through the casing into the formation and which extend fluid communication between the formation and the well bore.

Apparatus and method for stimulating a subterranean formation

A method and apparatus for perforating and stimulating a subterranean formation which is penetrated by a well bore having casing positioned therein so as to establish fluid communication between the formation and the well bore. A shell, sheath or sleeve of propellant material is positioned so as to substantially encircling at least one shaped charge in a subterranean well bore and is ignited due to the shock, heat and/or pressure generated from the detonated charge. Upon burning, the propellant material generates gases which clean perforations formed in the formation by detonation of the shaped charge(s) and which extend fluid communication between the formation and the well bore.
