A rigid central manifold block defines a coaxial inlet and outlet of the flowmeter and supports at least one continuous conduit loop substantially encircling the block and having its inlet and outlet ends closely spaced and rigidly connected to the block. Preferably, the loop includes a straight section perpendicular to the inlet and outlet ends. Dual drive means are preferably provided for oscillating the straight section back and forth about its perpendicular bisector and complementary position detectors employed at or near the opposite ends of the straight section, preferably at the same location as the drive units, provide readouts which are combined algebraically and synchronously demodulated to yield a Coriolis-related output indicative of mass flow. Preferably, a second loop, identical and parallel to the first, is supported by the same block. The block is channeled to serve as a manifold and interchangeable manifolds are disclosed for series and parallel flow through the two loops, respectively. The plane of the loop or loops can be oriented perpendicular or parallel (in line) to the process line.

Coriolis-type mass flowmeter

It has been discovered that vortex flowmeters can be suitably adapted for the measurement of two-phase fluid flows, and particularly for the measurement of steam quality, when disposed in a particular manner in horizontal flowpipes carrying such fluids. More specifically, the invention disclosed includes the disposition of a substantially linear vortex flowmeter horizontally and transversely in a horizontal flowpipe to measure two-phase fluid flows, for example, wet steam quality. When the mass flow rate is not determinable through knowledge of the feedstock, other sensors enable measurement of the vapor phase volumetric area and velocity to permit calculation of the flow measurand.

Steam quality measurement apparatus and method

A turbine flowmeter includes a rotor within a narrow-profile housing, the rotor having an axis of rotation aligned perpendicularly to the direction of fluid flow. The rotor employs a pair of oppositely directed, semi-cylindrical rotor elements disposed on either side of the axis of rotation, arranged in a generally rectangular configuration. Each element has a high drag front surface and a low drag back surface, the elements being twisted with respect to the axis so that at least a portion of a high drag surface is presented continually to the incoming fluid stream. Due to the wide disparity in drag between the front and back surfaces, and this twisted orientation, there is produced a continuous unidirectional net driving torque acting on the rotor, to prevent the occurrence of a null point, despite counter-resistance offered by the fluid. Furthermore, the gradually curving rotor protrudes minimally beyond the housing, and is able to rotatively adapt itself to the narrow spacing between pipe flanges. This effectively permits the insertion of the flowmeter into a space whose width is no greater than the width of the flowmeter housing alone. The placement of bearing surfaces and rotation-sensing instrumentation outside of the fluid flow facilitates maintenance of the flowmeter.

Vertical axis turbine flowmeter

At least one of two wing-like elements that extend longitudinally alongside each other in the stream of a flowing fluid is pivotally mounted so as to oscillate at a frequency proportional to fluid flow rate. These elements, after being properly positioned with respect to each other, are readily inserted in large conduits to provide accurate measurement of line average flow rate over a wide range of values.
