An abrasion and solvent resistant polyurethane protective coating for bilayer windshields is formulated by the reaction of a polyester or polyether diol with an aliphatic isocyanate-terminated prepolymer.

A transparent safety glass laminate having an optically acceptable exposed plastic surface is fabricated by laminating an outer glass sheet and an inner preformed plastic sheet under heat and pressure with the plastic surface to be exposed supported against an optically smooth mold, preferably a second glass sheet, which is coated with an optically smooth coating of a material which acts as a release agent to facilitate separation of the plastic surface from the mold after lamination.

Safety glass is made by laminating to a ply of glass a saturated polyvinyl acetal film incorporating a photoinitiator. The exposed surface of the film is irradiated with ultraviolet light which activates the photoinitiator which in turn initiates crosslinking of the polymer. The polymer film retains its desirable mechanical and optical properties while the crosslinked surface has improved solvent-abrasion resistance.

Laminated windshield with improved innerlayer

The surface characteristics of a partially crosslinked polyurethane innerlayer in a bilayer laminate are further improved by treating the polymer film with a small amount of a compound such as tetrahydrofuran, 1,4 dioxane, dimethyl formamide, morpholine, methylene chloride or secondary or tertiary lower alkyl amines in addition to the photoinitiator.

Safety glass made by laminating to a ply of glass a polyvinyl acetal film incorporating a photoinitiator. A laminated glass-plastic antenna windshield having an elongated conductive element, such as a wire embedded in preferred positions by a thermoplastic polyurethane layer, which is the plastic layer of the laminated antenna windshield. The antenna windshield has a higher Q-value than similar laminated antenna windshields provided with a layer of polyvinyl butyral to carry the elongated electroconductive element and those that carry the wire in positions other than said preferred positions.

Retarding bloom in normally blooming polyurethane interlayers which are used in laminated windows, particularly motor vehicle safety glass windows in which one major surface of the polyurethane is exposed to the atmosphere, by applying a layer of wax to the exposed major surface of the polyurethane interlayer is disclosed. The resulting window is free from bloom for at least several months.

Polyurethane laminates

A laminated bilayer antenna windshield having an outer glass sheet laminated to an inner sheet of polyvinyl butyral carring an elongated conductive element, such as a wire, in close relation to the interfacial surface with the outer glass sheet. The bilayer antenna windshield has a higher Q-value than similar bilayer laminated antenna windshields provided with a layer of polyvinyl butyral carrying the elongated electroconductive element in spaced relation to said interfacial surface or than the Q-value of conventional trilayer windshields having two glass sheets laminated to opposite sides of a layer of polyvinyl butyral carrying the elongated electroconductive element.
