In a cell where messages having a message type are sent without knowledge of radio frequency conditions for individual ones of user equipment within the cell, measured radio frequency conditions are accessed of multiple user equipment within the cell. Based on the measured radio frequency conditions, a minimum control channel coding rate is determined for a control channel for messages having the message type. Subsequent to a determination of the minimum control channel coding rate, transmission is caused toward all user equipment in the cell of the messages having the message type using the determined minimum control channel coding rate for the control channel. Methods, apparatus, computer programs, and program products are disclosed. The methods may be performed by a base station, self-organizing network server, or other apparatus.

Systems and techniques for discontinuous reception management for user devices communicating using carrier aggregation. Information relating to discontinuous reception for a user device is received and used to determine discontinuous reception states of the user device. The information relating to discontinuous reception may include, for example, past scheduling information, information received at one scheduler and reporting scheduling information for another scheduler, or discontinuous reception information managed at a media access control layer of a base station. The discontinuous reception information may be used for scheduling of a plurality of carriers used for carrier aggregation by a user device, with scheduling for each carrier being performed by a scheduler dedicated to that carrier.

Methods and apparatus for communication scheduling

In a network comprising a plurality of channels, at least two channels are operating at different frequencies. The fixed network equipment (FNE;) identifies a plurality of channels present at a serving site and classifies each channel into one of a plurality of bandwidth groups. All the channels in a given bandwidth group have common roaming characteristics. The FNE periodically broadcasts information relating to at least one channel in each bandwidth group present at the serving site. The FNE further identifies least one channel present at an adjacent site. Each channel present at the adjacent site is also classified in one of the plurality of bandwidth groups. The FNE broadcasts information on loading for each bandwidth group present at the adjacent site.

A system and method provides signaling privacy for communications between nodes of a communications network (30). Multiple logical links exist between distinct network nodes (38-40, 42, 50-53) of the communication network (30). Signaling privacy is achieved by a subscriber unit (80) providing encryption/decryption of signaling data messages at the messaging level. The subscriber unit (80) employs a signaling encryptor/decryptor (86) along the signaling path, which enables the signaling data messages to be separately encrypted from data on the traffic channel. The encrypted signaling data can then be sent along a different logical link from the traffic, while maintaining cipher key synchronization between the signaling encryptor/decryptor (86) and a network encryptor/decryptor (78) at a remote end of the logical link which transports the encrypted signaling data.

In a global satellite communication system (10) that provides antenna beams that move with respect to Earth's surface, gateways (22) send ring alerts directed to subscriber units (26) based on a list of antenna beams. The list of antenna beams is determined by a dot product between a subscriber unit's basis vector and antenna beam vectors. Ring alerts are transmitted in antenna beams when the dot product exceeds a predetermined threshold. Subscriber units listen for ring alerts in the same antenna beams of the list by calculating the list the same way the gateway calculates the list.

Surface contours are generated (104) based on the signal component measured. The surface contour intersections produce candidate locations on the earth's surface. The candidate locations seed a least-squares estimation to produce final locations. Data produced during the least-squares fit is used to generate confidence ellipses (116) about the final locations. Most likely actual locations are determined from the fit associated with the confidence regions. A variety of signal source measurements can be used while providing a best estimate of a signal source location when an exact solution is not mathematically possible. The location is converted to coordinates that can be used in a satellite communication system (10) for making decisions regarding the granting or denying of communication services, billing rate and the like.

Flexible signal source location apparatus and method therefor

A finite impulse response filter performs an FFT on a signal, multiplies it by a transfer function in the frequency domain, and then performs an inverse FFT. The transfer function is dynamically computed in real-time by detecting signal energy in the frequency domain and turning off bins that contain the signal. The signal is delayed prior to turning off the bin in a FIFO memory by an amount equal to the time required to compute the transfer function. In this way, relatively fast changes in the interference environment can be tracked and rejected. For example, short duration narrow band interference signals in the presence of a wideband signal of interest, including direct sequence (DS) spread-spectrum signals in the presence of frequency hopped (FH) spread spectrum signals are rejected. The received signal quality of DS spread spectrum signals is improved.

A surface acoustic wave (SAW) device in a pseudo-coherent moving target indicator uses a common input transducer to delay both reference and signal inputs to a mixer by varying amounts. The mixer produces a Doppler signal which is processed within a single range cell. The SAW device may contain additional delay paths which drive other range cells. Power splitting and amplification sections of the moving target indicator are minimized through use of the SAW device.
