A binocular indirect ophthalmoscope that is adapted to be worn on a wearer's head includes a headband and illumination housing having an illumination source and a viewer module wherein the viewer module is moveable between an in-use and an out-of-use position. A mounting assembly is provided for allowing the viewer module to be pivoted between the in-use and the out-of-use positions and also allows adjustment and locking to the wearer's face in the in-use position. The mounting assembly includes a magnetic securement of the viewer module in both the in-use and out-of-use positions. Part of the magnetic securement operates as an electrical contact to automatically provide power to the illumination source in the in-use position. An optical polarizer provides intensity adjustment of the light energy transmitted to the eye being examined. Preferably the illumination source is a light emitting diode.

Binocular indirect ophthalmoscope

A laryngoscope handle includes a switch assembly for creating an electrical circuit between a lamp and a battery when a laryngoscope blade attached to the handle is moved into a working position. The switch assembly is formed from: (1) a first sleeve in which the lamp is mounted, said first sleeve providing electrical contact between a side terminal of the lamp and the tubular base portion and leaving a base terminal of the lamp exposed, and said first sleeve being axially slidable within the handle; (2) a spring operative to press the first sleeve towards the head-end of the handle; (3) an electrically insulating barrel mounted within the handle between the first sleeve and the first end of the base portion, said electrically insulating barrel having an axial channel therethrough, said axial channel having a bottom region of greater cross section at a bottom end directed toward the first end of the tubular base portion and a top region of smaller cross section at a top end directed toward the head; (4) an electrically conductive sliding terminal, said sliding terminal being slidably disposed within the bottom region of the channel in the barrel; and (5) an electrically conductive plunger affixed to the sliding terminal and slidably disposed within the top region of the channel in the insulating barrel such that the sliding terminal and the plunger slide as a unit within the channel.

Switch mechanism for use in a laryngoscope handle

A positioning device for an optical device is formed of two substantially parallel mounting plates which extend laterally outward from a headband. Each mounting plate has two vertically elongated slots cut in it. The slots closest to the headband (proximal) are in alignment with each other, as are the distal slots on the two mounting plates. Attached to the headband between the two mounting plates is an adjustable stop, such as a threaded rod and nut. The mounting plates and adjustable stop accept an optical device such as an ophthalmoscope having a mounting block affixed to a surface thereof. The mounting block is formed from a body having a hole extending therethrough for receiving a pivot pin. The hole is substantially parallel to the surface of the optical device to which the mounting block is affixed. The mounting block also has two spring loaded balls disposed partially within the body at opposing ends of a line through the body which is parallel to the hole in the body and located below the hole. The mounting block is inserted between the mounting plates, and the pivot pin is inserted through the proximal slot in the first mounting plate, the hole in the body of the mounting block and the proximal slot in the second mounting plate. When fixed to the mounting plates, the position of the mounting block relative to the elongated slots is fixed against unintentional movements by a friction washer or spring. The mounting block pivots into a position resting against the adjustable stop. This position can be changed to accommodate the wearer of the headband. To move the optical device out of the way, the device and mounting block are pivoted upward until the spring loaded balls engage with the distal slots in the mounting plates.

A method of providing a thin parting zone in diamond and other crystal material is used to separate the crystal into multiple parts. The method comprises the following steps. An entrance window is prepared on the outer surface of the crystal. The window can transmit a beam of energy. An energy beam is focussed on a point zone of energy absorbing material which is spaced from the window in the crystal. The energy absorbing zone is generated at the focal point of the beam. The focal point of the beam is scanned through a succession of overlapping potential damage cells which lie along a predetermined parting zone within the crystal. The beam creates a plurality of actual damage cells comprised of shattered material which creates the parting surface. The succession of potential damage cell is such that the previously generated actual damage cells do not lie along the path of the beam between the actual damage cells being generated and the window.
