In a system having multiple internal Internet protocol (IP) stacks, such as a network element, a value of a time-to-live (TTL) parameter may not be changed by an ingress IP stack. An indication of internal forwarding within the system may be used. An egress IP stack may decrement the value of the TTL parameter. A public network address for the system may be used for response packets to diagnostic packets received by the system.

A method and system for determining a path between nodes in a network are disclosed. In accordance with an embodiment of the present disclosure, a system for determining a path between nodes in a network comprises a destination node and a link aggregation group (LAG) that includes a first link and a second link. The system further comprises a source node communicatively coupled to the destination node by the LAG where the source node, the LAG and the destination node form a path. The source node is operable to determine a link availability status for each of the first and second links using a layer-2 protection scheme. The source node is further operable to monitor the path for connectivity based on the link availability status using a layer-3 protection scheme.

According to a particular embodiment, a method for automatically assigning dynamic IP addresses without user interaction includes maintaining at least one pool of unused IP addresses. An advertisement message is transmitted from a first network element to at least one additional network element in a transport ring. The advertisement message identifies the first network element as providing IP address assignment services. The IP address request message from a second network element in the transport ring is received at the first network element. In response to the IP address request message, an IP address is dynamically assigned from the at least one pool of unused IP addresses. The dynamically assigned IP address is transmitted from the first network element to the second network element.
